Hmm, as I indicated earlier, I would largely discount Laura's start to 2012 for injury reasons. And it has been absolutely clear that she has been much more inconsistent early 2013 compared to late 2012, which I can't really see is venue related - that would more effect her general level.
I'm with Ratty here ( if not his full random s*** case ) in that a "trend" based on the last couple of years with so many other components is no sort of notable trend at all.
I am not sure about earlier years, but these years as she was still finding her way in the game, and indeed still growing, are of little significance to me.
Time will indeed tell, but I am very unconvinced that we won't see a lot better from Laura early season in the future, and more comparable to her later year form and results.
At the moment it is statistical fiddlesticks - technical term...
Very interesting, korriban, thanks for that insight, especially coming with his tennis perspective and not British focussed.
He does seem to bring real knowledge and thought to his views.
Without taking particular issue with anything you report, one thing I would say is that such as top level actual partipants or coaches in a sport often have views which are well worth listening to, but not necessarily on a pedestal and any more worthy than some enthusiastic and well infirmed followers. In sports which I follow, I take on board various "professional" views in the round.
Indy, I agree. I argued with him, and there's no black and white on this subject. But it's an interesting perspective.
He did point out that Benoit Paire was never singled out as being any better than Teixera (whose in the 200s), himself or any other of the squad players at the time, but Paire was by far the best athlete amongst them. He also confirmed Gasquet had (back then, it may have changed) a rather relaxed attitude to practice, not that he didn't always appear, but more that he used to casually bowl up and take things fairly easily, enough to put the youngsters in their place, but not really "Murray" like levels of intensity......I knew it!!
R2: ERAKOVIC, Marina (NZL)/WATSON, Heather (GBR) 104 lost to CHAN, Hao-Ching (TPE)/ HUSAROVA, Janette (SVK) 105 6-4 3-6 [5-10] Disappointing after the good first round victory, but not altogether surprising, though it was certainly an eminently winnable match.
