Lu is actually ranked (at WR 908 having dropped 131 places today) and was a top 200 player as recently as 2011 (a year in which she won a 25K and a 50K in China), that being the fourth year in a row she had finished in the top 250.

Funnily enough, Melanie South has played her twice in 25K Finals, beating her in China in 2006 then losing to her in Pune in 2008.

I tried for about 10 minutes to find Lu's ranking off the WTA's appaling system. With so many Lus and Lius and Jings and Jangs it's a nightmare. Sometimes it even comes back with pages and pages of names that don't even include a Jing or a Lu. frustrated.gifangered.gif

I know, the main tennis sites are becoming harder and harder to use, sadly. Presumably in order to be more accessible to casual fans, but I'd be surprised if even that 'plan' is working. I probably wouldn't have even thought to check, but Lu Jing-Jing isn't a name I find easy to forget!

I use the ITF tournaments pages, and from the appropriate 'drawsheet' tab, you can click directly in to any players correct record.

Sally: The 'current' rankings on Wikipedia pages are often years out of date (even, oddly, when some of the other info on the page has been added more recently - e.g. I think the country top 10s at the bottom of some of the player pages on Wikipedia get updated (semi-)automatically.

blob: The ITF site is what I usually use to get rankings/activity/H2H info too, previously because it was massively easier to use, now because although it's much worse since the 'upgrade' last year, it's still not quite as bad as the WTA site. However, ITF has varied from incredibly slow to non-functional most of today (and some other times recently), so it's not always an option.

Nicola also lost her singles match in 3 sets

Darn.

Was a decent draw for Nik and a win would have given her very welcome prize money plus 8 ranking points in addition to her 1 for qualifying.

Nicola was clearly bamboozled by her opponent

Her own reaction was much the same:

"Serving for 1st 5-3 lose it 7-5, win next 6-3 up a break in 3rd then 6 break points at 3-3, lose 6-3. Faaaantastic #wastedopportunity"

R1: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 460 beat KEIR, Ashley (AUS) Q 904 by 3 & 3

R2: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 460 v OZAKI, Risa (JPN) 6 307 (= CH)

Ozaki is an 18-year-old who thrashed Emily 1 & 2 at Gifu 50K last year. At her age, she may be improving fast too but in fact, she doesn't seem to be in such great form in Australia and hopefully Emily can do a lot better against her on grass.

Just noticed from Steven's top 25 tables that EWS (@ #13) is a full 232 ranking places and 40 ranking points ahead of the next GB girl in the list. That's more than 3 $10k tournament wins of difference, or 5 $25k L16 performances. A gulf in class, which really does show the lack of depth problem very clearly.

Where are the up and coming top 5 GB female players coming from?

Our top junior at present is 18 year old Katy Dunne JWR 19. She has played in 6 ITF and WTA events so far, winning one match against a 600 ranked player and getting good scores against other mid ranked players. Several of our other good young players are off to Uni and may well return and follow in Sam's footsteps. However there are no obvious Heathers or Lauras around at present, though I notice there are a few 13,14, 15 year olds in the junior rankings.

SF: Bojana BOBUSIC/Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (AUS/GBR) [2] 514 vs. Tammi PATTERSON/Viktorija RAJICIC (AUS/AUS) 1056

Emily in with a decent chance to make her second 25K doubles final on this trip down under
