You wouldn't expect any better from the Daily Fail but that BBC quote is a classic. Clearly arithmetic is not a strong point in today's reporters.

This is why, despite his considerable journalistic skills, his tenacity in the face of insurmountable climactic challenges, and his inside track on the soft underbelly of GB tennis overseas, I fear Bob in Spain will never make it as a bone fide journalist: his maths is simply far too good!!!!!!

Would be a lovely example for a textbook, that. "Common maths misunderstandings" or something ....

I think there is a little bit of licence here however small that is. Technically of course a 40 ranking is inside the top 40, but 39 does sound alot better, a bit like 99 sounds alot better than 100.
