RE: Week 7 - ITF ($25K) - Rancho Santa Fe, USA Hard

Sam's lost a match she was expected to win - disappointing

Despite losing the final tie-break 7-1, Sam still won more points overall.

Bit of a washout in the tiebreaker unfortunately after a long battle to stay in it at 5-6

Mind boggling match.

It would be very easy to pile in with generalisations, sweeping statements and proclamations about the entire remainder of Sam's career based on this match, followed on live score.

But what would be the point you can't possibly explain or guess away such a freakish turnaround without more information.

Hope all is well with Sam, she still has real potential - due to play dubs later - perhaps a retirement to lie in a darkened room!

Gutted! I just don't understand what Sam seems to be going through mid-way through these matches.

Her opponent was a top 20-30ish junior who I believe plays doubles with Katy Dunne, and is probably a similar level player, nothing more. If last week repeated itself, it was the serve which is the major culprit....far fewer DFs this time, but I'm guessing a very low first serve percentage indeed.

If anything proves tennis is in the mind, these last 2 matches are it!

Time for bed

With regards to Tara's R2 match she is 1-0 on Pavlovic (QF Felixstowe $25K, grass, 2008, 6-2 6-2)
Not sure that will be terribly relevant this time. Pavlovic is also due to play dubs today after her marathon. Let's hope for another very long match to help Tara cause an upset

Makarova is 16 years old and world junior 16. She beat Lina Stanciute 228 last week so she was probably confident that she could beat Sam. It's always hard to judge just how good a junior is when they start playing seniors.

Great pity about Sam, especially with the positions she has got into in these last two matches.

Who knows why the sudden going off the boil, but clearly she will be very annoyed and frustrated herself. well moreso. I am thus reluctant to be too critical, just hope she can turn it round very soon.

All the more frustrating after showing such capabilities at the backend of last year.

Very decisive scoreline for Tara. And in R2, Pavlovic may be no 1 seed, but rather more relevantly the rankings differential isn't that huge ( looks as if there has been a pretty tight grouping of seeds ).

I'd say a match that an on form Tara ( and she still does blow hot and cold ) is well capable of winning.

When I had to go, Sam was 6-1 *3-0 up, having won 8 games in a row. I couldn't believe the final score when I got back

Eep! Sam's doubles was an almost complete re-run of the singles!
Murray/Wienerova (GBR/SVK) 481 lost to (WC) Chirico/Lumpkin (USA/USA) 6-2 6-7(6) [8-10]

Hopefully Arizona next week will be kinder to her than California was.

Tara's singles is 2nd up after 17:30 - but on the outside court with no live score (so far this week)
Mel/Tara's doubles is 4th up on the main court.

OK, we can blame Steven. It's official. Very impressive stuff from Tara, after she went temporarily walkabout for a set and a half last week. Lisa will be annoyed with her day after a double breadstick. Before she won her last (and only) service game, Lisa was averaging less than 2 points per service game, so it wasnt even close - lots of work to be done on serve I suspect. Could be awkward at breakfast this morning in their apartment! As Indy says, the rankings gap isnt too great between Tara and the #1 seed, and with great form (forgetting last weeks blip) and being fresher, could be a good match, very winnable.

Oh Sam. She's missed two great opportunities to put some points on the board and move her ranking up. Losing matches like this is not a confidence builder.

That's a surprising doubles result too :(

Yes. What a shame for Sam!

However it was still close and as it was Steven's fault this time(!) try to forget it and look forward to her next game.
