RE: Entries Week 9 - 25/02/2013

Point taken, and who am I to wonder about a professional's scheduling, one might add. They know what they're doing; I merely dabble in viewing occasionally from outside. And I do get the prize money argument!

I do, however, think there's a substantial difference between suggesting that someone (whoever that may be) might wish to venture from 10Ks into Challengers and suggesting that a few good wins to consolidate points at 250 level might be preferable to potential 0 pointers from a succession of 500s with extremely tough competition. The 250s are not at a "lower level" than the 500s in the same way that futures are at a "lower level" than Challengers. The top seeds in both San Jose and Delray Beach are the Bryans, and the number two seeds at Delray Beach are hardly slouches either .

PS: I sincerely hope that the outcome is actually a succession of good wins at 500 level ... which I think that Inglot and Huey are perfectly capable of having!

Even more surprising:

Now what should I do? I could play doubles in Dubai and have my 1st class accomodation paid and with my Partner pick up over $3,000 each just for losing in the first round, or over $63,000 each if we win the tournament. Or I could go to a Travellodge in Cardiff that I have to pay for where the prize money is 100 times less ($36 each for losing in the first round or $310 each if we win the tournament). Decisions, decisions!!!! It has to be Cardiff!!!!!!!Just a shame that I may miss out on the singles seeding there!!!

When was the last time a current Grand Slam champion played a $10K Futures in the UK?

Freddie Nielson - Currently 21 ATP ranking for doubles

It is very peculiar.

Being very much a singles person, as opposed to doubles, when I first heard how he wanted to concentrate on his singles career, as opposed to teaming up long time with Marray, I thought - pity for Jonny, but good on the bloke.

But actually when you consider his age, where he stands in singles and the benefits he is passing by, while a little bit of me still admires him, I'm much more with the general consensus. He's mad !

With Mr. Marray apparently now out for some weeks, might Mr Nielsen be convinced to come back (albeit briefly) to doubles to assist Mr Fleming? I think he's the only "unpaired" person at that ranking level currently playing (no, it would appear that Daniele Bracciali, is another ... and needs to make up points pronto, given that he has 720 from Roland Garros. And, oddly, Marcelo Melo, whom I would have assumed to be in a stable pairing). At any rate, were it necessary (and were they to be a good pairing ... don't know whether they would complement each other or not), it would be an act of friendship, as well as beneficial financially ....

I can't see why Freddie would desert singles to play with Colin if he wouldn't do it to play with Jonny after their success together last year. Pairing up with a clay courter for the clay court season (if Bracciali is free and them pairing up is feasible) might be a good way to make the best of an unfortunate chain of events.

Jamie Delgado tweeted that after Marseille he's back in the UK to get his back sorted 'hopefully for good'.
So might Ken Skupski be without a partner for a while; maybe we'd see Flemski pairing up temporarily?

I'd wondered about Flemski, depending on Mr Marray's health, for the Davis Cup. But isn't Mr Skupski's wife having a baby shortly? That might rule him out in the immediate future (and explain Mr Delgado's timing).

I suppose, regarding Steven's point, that I'd wondered whether something temporary to help out a friend in need might be more likely than something that involved a long-term commitment to doubles with a permanent partner. But can also see the potential in Mr Bracciali during the clay season.

Well, I clearly hadn't seen Mr Bopanna (Week 8 partner for Mr Fleming) coming. Shows what we outsiders know. Will that be temporarily permanent until Mr Marray's return?

(PS: In week 8, not only is Mr Nielsen not playing with a GB player in Marseille, he's teaming up to play against two of them. Hope he doesn't do the same in Cardiff)

Looks like Oli has wihdrawn from the week 9 Spanish futures, although he is still on the acceptance list for the following week's tournament. Foot injury not healing quickly enough perhaps or maybe a WC request for Cardiff instead?

I'd think much more likely that it is Oli wanting at least another week before his return.

I'd be very surprised if, having previously planned these two weeks in Spain, he would then want to switch to Cardiff.

By the way, would there be any issue with withdrawing from one event that you had entered to take up a WC for a same level event elsewhere that you had not previously entered ?

Just something in the back of my mind. Quite likely confused nonsense !
