Ward now a set & 4-0* up. lets not have one of those switch off sessions he can be prone too, just finish it off.

Thing is Americans are usually under rather than over-ranked. Was a bit nervous about how it would go an hour or so ago after the shocker last week. Would agree - on this evidence Berman is not a 500'er.

That's another good win vs Duckworth. Now let's be following it up this time, James !

Glad to see he did  - I hadn't realised there would be a stream!

L16: James Ward WR 263 beat (Q) Sean Berman (USA) WR 721 by 3 & 1

James is the first Brit to reach an ATP Challenger singles QF this year and he plays the winner of (1) Sugita v Reid, which is on court now.

Really you should realise - most ATP events have streaming these days. smile

Berman seems to be the opposite of Jo Konta, and has been waiting for ages for Aussie citizenship. His profile I found here http://www.tennis.com.au/player-profiles/sean-berman is funny - Strengths are his consistency from the back of the court, as well as a steely determination and a never-give-up attitude. None of this was in evidence today!

Wardy plays [1] Sugita in the QF.

James Ward @JamesWardtennis
"Another win today 3 n 1. Quarters tmrw against 1st seed sugita! Looking forward to it #Adelaide"

Me thinks Mr Berman maybe confuses attitude with steely determination.

QF: James Ward WR 263 v (1) Yuichi Sugita (JPN) WR 140 (CH 116 last Nov)

Sugita has picked up most of his points in Asian Challengers & Futures, so is probably a bit over-ranked. He beat Jamie Baker in 3 sets in Toyota in November.

A great chance for James to win his first challenger of the year should he take care of Sugita. A title here would take him back to inside the top 200 about 190 mark

I am liking the phrase "win his first challenger of the year", given no Brit has won a single challenger event since James himself won his second in August 2011.

But yes, Sugita may not be as daunting as his ranking suggests and if James comes throught that he is in there with a shout.

James on court

Opened with a tough hold for Wardy, followed by a hold to love for Sugita.

*1-1

James managed to save 2 break points but not a 3rd

Not enough 1st serves at the moment

1-2*

Forehand in the net from Sugita and James breaks back

*2-2

Some 1st serves and Wardy holds to 15

3-2*

Some really nice shots from James inculding a nice backhand DTL sees him break to love

*4-2

A hold to 30 for James

5-2*

An error from Sugita and another break to love means Wardy takes the set

6-2

Second set

A drop shot sees James hold to 30

1-0*

James breaks again to 30

*2-0

Didn't seem likely but Sugita breaks

2-1*

Hold to 30 for Sugita

*2-2

An ace wraps up a routine hold to love for James

3-2*

Some solid groundstrokes and Wardy breaks

*4-2

A hold to 30 for James sees him 1 game away from the match

5-2*

Wardy will have to serve for it

*5-3

And he does no fuss no drama

Wardy wins 6-2 6-3

I am aware of this fact it was meant as a positive statement. I have noticed a few people in here being rather royal and suggesting that I am new to this game. I've been following tennis since the 90s Jeremy Bates era so well aware of the history.

Given the players left now anything other than the title would be disappointing now
