more rotten luck for Nomes in the MD, seems never ending for her
Naomi Broady WR334 vs. Alberta Brianti ITA [3] WR160
You make your own luck. At this level you shouldn't be relying in luck in draws. It's better to play better players gives a more realistic picture if a true ranking rather than beating unranked wild cards and qualifiers.

I would argue that it's not quite as simple as that, when confidence is an important factor and that has a lot to do with a player's recent win/loss ratio and you're only going to get a 'true' ranking if your luck in terms of R1 draws evens out over the course of a year.
Having said that, Brianti is on a 4-match losing streak stretching back to last September.

I agree. Yes Naomi needs to be winning these matches if she hopes to make the top 100, but if her confidence is low then she needs a slightly kinder draw and the chance to play herself back into form.
To counter the above two posts again it could also be argued that losing to a wild card or unranked player would do more damage than losing to a Brianti. Winning against a top 150 player would raise confidence. We should be looking at Brits playing the best players they can rather than hoping for weak opponents to get exaggerated rankings.
Sam Murray is a good example of this. She took out a load of top 200 players on her way up the rankings and I think she may even continue to benefit from playing at a higher level again this year.
FQR: Jade WINDLEY (GBR) [5] 449 beat Nicole CLERICO (ITA) [15] 594 (CH 381 in 2009) by 2 & 2
Lots of close games in that match (at least in the 2nd set when I had half an eye on the scores) but Jade won most of them and dropped just 8 games lost in 3 qualifying matches
