The Tennis Europe Winter Cup started this weekend with the under 12s succeeding in qualifying for the finals to be held in 2 weeks time in Sheffield. The team of Lauren Armstrong, Esther Adeshina and Tanysha Dissanayake beat Belgium 2-1 to secure qualification, but hardly won a game against the perennially strong Russians, so will be unseeded in the finals. The under 14s (Katie Swan, Anastasia Mikheeva and Georgina Axon nominated) and under 16s (Jasmine Amber Asghar, Freya Christie and Maia Lumsden nominated) play next weekend
Yes the 12U girls did lose against Russia in the Winter Cup. But do get your facts straight before you post comments such as 'the girls hardly won a game against the Russians'..... scores were 6-2 6-3 and 6-0 6-1 in the 2 singles rubbers. Doubles 6-3 6-1
Maybe a bit harsh, but at less than 2 games per set, I can see where David was coming from, especially if he was trying to summarise in a hurry - and knowing how good David is at going above and beyond the call of duty in supplying us with info on the juniors, my guess is he was in a hurry otherwise he might have posted in a bit more detail. (or maybe not, I don't know why I'm trying to second guess him )
Thanks for providing the set scores. At least a couple of the sets do look competitive and, more to the point, you can't lose to (the unsurprisingly strong) Russia in the Final without playing well enough to get to the Final in the first place, as David made clear at the start of the paragraph, so well done to the girls for qualifying.
If you did find the description a bit harsh, well at least this isn't like much of the GB media, where when a lower-ranked Brit has a good week, they tend only to report on the loss (or the 'crashing out' in tabloid terms - a simple loss, even a close one to a higher-ranked player, apparently not being an option for some journalists) and completely ignore the fact that the player has done well to get themselves into a position to take part in that match in the first place ...
Good luck to Lauren, Esther and Tanysha in Sheffield!

The under 14 and under 16 qualifying events are underway. Last year the under 14s were unlucky to be drawn against the eventual winners in their qualifying section, but the draw looks more favourable this year. The under 16s are seeded 1 in their qualifying section, despite not having their strongest team (seeding based on the combined Tennis Europe rankings of the top 2 players) whereas there are 6 nations with higher ranked players than our top 2 in one of the other qualifying groups.
Reaching the finals here is required to qualify for the overall finals and both our teams got byes to the semis
Smooth progress for the under 14s after Katie came from behind to clinch a long opener. The match tomorrow against Germany determines who will be seeded in the finals
U14 qualifying SF
(1) Great Britain d. (4) Ukraine 3-0
Katie won 3-6 7-6(0) 6-3 Anastasia won 7-5 6-3 Georgia/Katie won 6-0 6-0
A nice double success against the Germans. Maia maintained her form to ensure the under 16s will not be drawn against Russia or the other group winners.
In the under 14s last week Katie Swan retired against the German number 2 (in Tarbes) after comfortably winning the first set . Today Anastasia Mikheeva suffered the same misfortune, but Georgina and Katie rescued the situation
U14 qualifying F
(1) Great Britain 2 (2) Germany 1
Anastasia lost 6-1 1-2 rtd Georgina won 6-3 6-3 Georgina/Katie won 6-3 6-3
U16 qualifying F

Freya lost 4-6 3-6 Maia won 7-5 6-2 Maia/Freya won 7-5 6-1
The other finals start tomorrow with the under 14s drawn against Spain, who are often underranked through not playing many tournaments, whilst the under 16s play Hungary, a tough prospect given that their top two players are already in the ITF top 200
The under 16s went down 2-1 but there was a first win in the competition for Freya over the Hungarian number 3. The team will therefore play for 5th-8th place
QF (4) GBR 1 Hungary 2
Freya won 6-4 6-1 Maia lost 3-6 4-6 Maia/Freya lost 4-6 5-7
The chance of adding another Winter Cup to the under 12 boys disappeared this afternoon as the under 14s went down 2-1 to the Czech Republic, and thus play for 3rd place against Romania, who boast the TE No. 1, but could not overcome the strength in depth of the Russians
U14 SF (3) GBR 1 (2) Czech Republic 2
Anastasia won 6-1 6-3 Georgina lost 4-6 5-7 Katie/Georgina lost 2-6 1-6
The under 14s finished third, beating Romania 2-0 with wins for Katie and Anastasia (over the TE No. 1 who thrashed her in Tarbes) The Czech Republic beat Russia in the final. The under 16s finished 6th after a convincing 3-0 victory over Serbia (Freya and Jasmine winning singles) and a 2-0 defeat to Slovakia
