Week 5 - WTA International ($235K) - Pattaya City, Thailand - Hard

L32: (8) Heather Watson WR 50 v Timea Babos (HUN) WR 73 (CH 59 last Aug)

Starting with her loss to Petkovic in New Haven (and includng her loss to JoKo at the USO), Babos is on an 8-match losing streak, though she did go very close against Mladenovic at the AO - the Impaler won 11-9 in the 3rd.

The other seed in Hev's quarter is Cirstea and the top seed in her half is Kirilenko.

Heather's opponent is in 'relatively' good form - Cadantu had lost 9 in a row coming in to the Australian Open! With this match almost certain to occur in the Fed Cup a convincing win by Hev would be a good statement of intent.

Have to like the rest of her section too, Doi or a qualifier in the next round and Cirstea the other seed who Hev has a 2-0 H2H against. Kirilenko would be a very tough semi-final if both get that far.

Decent draw, so hopeful of at least a QF run.

Hev & Marina are #2 seeds in the dubs.
They first play Amanmuradova/Panova (UZB/RUS)
Heather could also get some doubles practice in against Babos in the QF, should both teams progress through R1.

Neither of Watson's matches are scheduled for tomorrow.

Looks nicer with updated rankings...

Is this Hev's first International level seeding?
I'll be trying to find out after I type this, but my 'research' on things like this is normally flawed somehow, so still appeal to anyone who might have a categorical answer.

You can see the entry seed / route for the last year on one of Steven's many stats pages.

Thanks for that. I think the seed # on that chart was only instituted for this year onwards - in the column headings.
Laura was seeded 8 in, ironically, Osaka, last year, where Hev was the 9th ranked entrant after a late WC - this not being recorded in Stevens table confirms the heading.

I can't see that Hev has ever had a WTA tour singles seeding before - trawling her results from last year - unless anyone does know different.

Yes, that's right - seeding information is only on the women's best 16 list from the start of 2013 onwards, whereas I started including that info on the men's best 18 list from the start of 2012.

I think Hev has been one or two places off a WTA main draw seeding once or twice (e.g. Auckland) but hasn't actually been seeded in a WTA main draw before. The last time she was seeded in any main draw was at the St Gaudens 50K last May, when she lost to Mlad the Impaler in R1, and all previous seedings she has had in WTA events were just in qualifying.

Btw it's worth remembering when looking at those lists to find out the first time a player was seeded that even after the date I start including seeding information, a tournament where they were seeded will only appear if the player picks up any ranking points there. So if a female player is seeded in a 10K or a male player is seeded in any tournament below Masters level, that tournament will only appear on their list if they win at least one match.

I almost failed to take that into account myself at one point last year when I was about to write that a (male) player had matched or bettered their seeding in every tournament they had played for N months before realising that I had forgotten to check whether they had suffered any R1 losses ... they had!

Perhaps I should show every tournament in which a player was seeded on those tables, even ones where they ended up pointless ...

Thanks for that.

Your T25 tables will record the seeding information anyway I think.

As the rankings breakdown tables display selected information pertinent to those tournaments that can be used to towards a players ranking, I think that as they are, they contain the correct set of data. Adding events that can not be used towards rankings, just to record instances of seedings, would, to my mind, dilute the purpose.

If one wishes to find historical seedings (a far less common excercise than checking ranking compositions I suspect) it is not unreasonable for them to wander back through the T25 sheets; or, as I did, check the WTA Draw archives from the relevant tournaments.

Lets hope Hev can make good use of her first seeding, hopefully the first of many to come, and for Laura too.

Next milestone: First seeding of both together in a single tournament

Even had Laura played here, it would not have happened, but hopefully it won't be long.

It might actually be harder to achieve at a $235K level than a GS because of the increased # of seeds, and the fact that both girls are guraranteed to play GS together, if fit, but their seasons schedule in the interrim for the two doesn't necessarily see them meet up too often at an event in the $235K level.

A decent hour to follow and then on for doubles after her singles after suitable rest.
