Week 5 - Challenger ($50,000) - Burnie, Australia (hard)

Wardy is staying down under to play this Challenger in Tasmania:

L32: James Ward WR 247 v (6) James Duckworth (AUS) WR 223 (CH 167 last May)

Duckworth was the player who beat Ben Mitchell 8-6 in the 5th in the all-Aussie WC R1 match at the AO then lost 10-8 in the 5th to Kavcic in R2, when the Slovenian ended up on a drip despite winning. Not quite up to Wardy's 40-game 5th set against Chris a few years back, but still! wink

Very unlucky to miss out on seeding there.

A tough first round draw there for Wardy.

Duckworth pushed Istomin to the wire the week before AO in Sydney, losing a third set tie-break.

It shouldn't matter what the draw is Wardy still has a better career high. If he is to push on this year he needs to win this type of match.

He's also the guy who reached the final of the Newcastle 10k event in May 2011.

I agree with Jaggy1876 on this. This match has to be considered one for him to win.

Duckworth's last 5 service games:
Hold to love
Hold to love
Hold to love
Broken to love
Hold to love

Go figure!

1-6 6-3 2-2*

Sadly sleep has won the battle and I can't watch any more.

...Or so I thought. Wardy breaks, finishing it with a nice winner.

1-6 6-3 *3-2

Wardy's movement looks quite laboured - not injured, more uninterested? Lots of mistimed balls and poor footwork.

1st set down the pan
1-6

Saved BP's to stay ahead in the 2nd. Looking a little bit more lively.
Duckworth's deep BH slice is giving James a lot of trouble
1-6 2-1*

Wraps up the second with a nice cross court FH winner in to the corner
1-6 6-3

Game on! Hard to explain the turnaround, just keep it going.
