A Real shame. I always felt 2 things with Naomi. Firstly that her serve is very powerful, and can easily put her opponents on the back foot at the start of matches, but often it becomes predictable and easy to read mid match, negating the advantage, and often becoming a liability. Secondly that her backhand was strangely produced and prone to runs of screaming winners or glaring errors. Many commentators regarded her backhand as her best shot, but I always felt it was unreliable. I may be wrong, but I suspect many of her matches she starts well, often a set up, then the above kicks in and she fades. Will go and check actual results.
I think this really is a make or break year for her.
Naomi and Jo are forming two entente cordiale partnerships for the doubles Naomi, with Bremond, faces Bychkova/Krunic (RUS/SRB) Jo, with Larriere, faces Burnett/Sinikova (ITA/BUL)
That's a bit of an unpleasant shock. I thought Jo had a decent shot at this title. Perhaps the turnaround from AO was too soon. Otherwise, especially after that first set, it's a mystifying result to me.
I have high hopes for Mandy Carreras this week also, hope this doesn't set the tone for the week. I thought we might get three british winners in the same week, here, In Egypt, & Preston
