My money is on him being drawn against his old "mate" Chase Buchanan. They had a couple of real "ding-dongs" at the back end of last year.
Wow! Win 12 out of 14 on his USA tour, and what a win!
Only 1 more victory and he gets a ranking point.....how tantalising!
Only one of the potential MD opponents looks like an "easy" match, but since the powers that be clearly want our boys to be "tested" to the max over a prolonged period, if he draws one of the top seeds, perhaps that's exactly what his coaches want.
Maybe there is some method to all of this..........if, say, Kyle were planning to enter the qualifiers for a series of European or South American clay challenger events in March/April at a higher playing standard, these streetfight tournaments might pay off in the long run........although if he doesn't keep nudging his ranking up, he wouldn't make the cuts anyway!
Good luck for the MD, you deserve to do well after being obliged to play 12 qualifying matches in 3 weeks!
Bob. Liam mentioned via twitter that he was played in a WC playoff competition for this tournament ahead of qualies, winning his first match, but presumably not securing the WC spot (suspect just 1 slot was available to all-comers, with the rest for US players). Perhaps this Austrian came out on top.

Good spot. I remember that comment now that you mention it. But it does seem a strange way to do things. What is the difference between a qualifying tournament for an MD spot and a qualfiying tournament (playoff competition) for a WC spot in the MD ?
The normal qualifying route will be an ITF event, at the same venue, with a one-event-per-week limitation. Also, it will be based on ranking, so if you're not ranked high enough, you won't even make the qualifying cut.
A wild-card play-off event is run by the regional governing body (USTA in this case), and they can set and collect the entry fee, and they can hold the event outside of the event week. Also, I believe it's first come, first served, so if you pay your entry fee you can play irrespective of ranking.

I should have guessed it. It is all about the money
