128 man, 4 round qualifying draw out, and once again Luke and James are drawn in the same section, meaning only 1 can theoretically qualify. You couldn't make this up! 3 times out of 3 this scenario has occurred on this trip......i.e. 2 Brits drawn together.....not that it ever mattered, since only Kyle has qualified (once) from all of them in 2 tournaments. Kyle's record to date is played 10, won 8 (all straight sets), lost 2, ranking points 1. The other 3 obviously have no ranking points at all. Still trying to figure out the cunning plan for 2013 that is best served by kicking off the year with 3-4 weeks of insane level qualifier tournaments!!!! I must be missing something here..........anyway.........

Good to see that "Kyle and the Gang" Cherish another chance to produce some results in Florida worthy of a Celebration. Hope they're feeling Fresh though, because they'll really need to Get Down On It if they want some ranking points.
P.S. As you screw up your faces in horror, keep in mind the one consolation - that I can't really sink any lower than this (can I?)

Wins for Kyle, Luke and Janes. And a thrashing for Liam against a lower ranked player. Its been a very poor 3 weeks for Liam. I remain baffled at the decision to take our top juniors and Team Aegon young seniors out for 3-4 weeks of high intensity but low reward tornaments. What to they take home with them, because it wont be ranking points.

Problem is that there are fewer tournaments this year than last year and so the draws are tougher everywhere, not just in Florida.
Broady's result against Podzus isn't such a huge surprise if you look at the latter's playing record (which I hadn't, prior to this moment, but have now). Like the LTA group, he's been playiing a lot of US futures with huge qualifying draws. He's won relatively few main draw matches, but a lot of matches overall, including some over quite decent players.
Suspect that his current ranking says more about the role of WCs than of his playing. Latvia has (according to the ITF) no tennis tournaments. So this is a young player (18) who is having to fight through qualifying for everything he enters. It's inherently going to take him longer to get a few points than it is players from countries where they can, at least once in a while, benefit from a MD WC.
All of which is actually encouraging for Mr Broady!

It is a bit frustrating but I think these group trips are good for the players development. In any case I would much prefer the slow and steady approach of lots of matches with fewer points. The opposite is you end up with players who shoot up the rankings before stagnating, losing confidence and plummeting.

And then just when it all gets easier and they could get into the main draw, they all, except James, go home! (James is already in the main draw for the next one.)
