R2: GRIFFIN, Alannah (GBR) WC UNR lost to VAN UYTVANCK, Alison (BEL) 1 200 by 1 & 1 R2: WHYBOURN, Lisa (GBR) 5 292 beat FITZPATRICK, Anna (GBR) 716 by 6-1 2-6 6-0
Anna Smith played quite well in her match with Mme Larriere despite loosing. Hopefully she can continue her comeback and get back to beating these higher ranking players.
Interesting to see Alexandra Stevenson, however she didn't seem too animated. She was ahead at the beginning of the match but Lucy turned it round to win the set, then the American suddenly retired, early in the second. I can only assume she had a niggling injury which prevented her playing to her potential and did not want to aggrevate it.
Another injury scare for Tara Moore in her match with Jessica Ren. She was lying on court for a while before the trainer came and after a lengthy time out she was thankfully able to continue. A pity because Jessica was just getting a comeback going and it would have been nice to see what transpired without the time out and injury worries. But well done to Tara for perservering and having the courage to continue and win.
I have been very impressed with Danielle Konotoptseva. She seems to play with a great degree of freedom and has had 2 good main draw wins here after a good win in the last round of qualifying. She has a good build for tennis and is certainly one to watch.
Disappointment for Fran Stephenson and Alannah Griffin, although Alannah was up against the October finalist here. Fran's loss to the improving Irish girl was more disappointing but the other girl was higher ranked. Anna Fitzpatrick made a good comeback to level against Lisa Whybourn, but in the final set Lisa dominated. Her match with Van Uytvanck tomorrow will be a very good test for her. As will Bowtell's match with Tara, Lucy's match with Mme Georges and Danielle's match with Victoria Larriere. Is it too much to expect some more giant killing from Danielle?
Well one out of four is better than none. Eventually some class French girls and the top seed put paid to the rest. Good week for Konotoptseva though and Tara is more than capable of beating Van Uytvanck, but it will be difficult.
Yes, I wouldn't say any of the four did worse than expected and two of them did better - Danielle in particular more than doubling her points total by reaching her first 10K QF.
Tara has played AvU once before, the Belgian winning the 2011 Sunderland Final 4 & 1. Hopefully Tara has more of a chance this time around.

One thing, in the topic title, is this not an ITF event, rather than the WTA indicated?
Yes, it is - amended
An interesting feature of this system. I originally listed it as WTA and very quickly corrected it. However on pages 2 and 3 it remains as a WTA event, despite being corrected for a 2nd time.
The all-French semi here went much like the all-French match at the Aus Open, albeit not quite as long, but with the same failures to serve it out, etc. It ended in a 3rd set tiebreak a minute or two after Simon beat Monfils:
