Week 3 - Australian Open (women's)

Unreturned serves (including aces) R 23 (11 aces, 9x1, 3x2) - O 15
Points won in 3 shots or less (forced errors on 4th shot count, ues don't) R 48 - O 29
Winning margin R+16 (so Oudin +3 on points won after a rally)

Impressive first set from Laura, plenty of super forehands behind her 2nd serve as well as 7 aces and 4 clean return winners and one that forced an error. Oudin seemed to have a plan to slice her backhand in order to keep the ball low and for a while this did trouble Laura, though as the match developed she started to respond with her own sliced backhand. 2nd set wasn't that great from either player. Both rather guilty of just giving away their serve; fortunately Robson did it just once, recovering after being footfaulted on her 2nd serve then following that with another df, but having reached game point her forehand went to pieces, putting 3 in the net. At times Laura looked very slow to react, made worse by the fact that she was leaving a big gap on the forehand side rather than standing dead centre. Fortunately Mel played a truly abysmal service game at 3-3 then helped Laura with a couple of soft errors in the final game.

Difficult to assess Laura's play on the break points as so often Melanie either saved the bp through great play or gave it away with a wild first groundstroke. So far this season Laura has found it difficult to hold serve in games in which she's faced a bp. I get the impression she's not quite match tight yet.

Incredible how many times either the umpire over-ruled a call or a challenge was won by one of the players. Robson's 2nd serve had a lot more spin on it this time than I've ever noticed before; not surprised she got some unreturned 2nd serves. First groundstroke after her serve has room for improvement. Far fewer really poor shots today then in the matches against Sloane Stephens or Niculescu. Footwork still needs a lot of work, especially moving to her left and getting into position to return. Laura's standard of tennis during the rallies is nowhere near the level she displayed at the US Open last year.

"I think I played pretty well, just not as well as I would have liked to. Hopefully in the next match it will be a bit better," said Robson. "I can hit it pretty hard these days but I think the key is moving around the ball enough to get it to where I want it to go every time. Today I just hit a few balls late here and there, where I should have just moved my feet a little bit."

Having watched some of Kvitova v Schiavone, I have absolutely no idea how the next round will go. Petra played some really intelligent points, pushing Schiavone around the court yet was also guilty of astonishing shot selection at times. Schiavone's first serve percentage (46%) probably wasn't high enough to give her a chance to get the win. Laura will need to be well ahead on unreturned serves if she is to get through; obviously a high first serve percentage is vital.

Laura is currently ranked 2nd for aces but has a much better % of aces per first serves in play than the other contenders. Her 11/31 compares favourably with Babos' 15/81, Serena's 5/17 and Sharapova's 6/28. Not calculated aces as a percentage of service points but I'd imagine she'll be near the top on that too.

I'm up and looking forward to this, whilst also feeling a bit nervous. This is the same court as when Laura won last year so hopefully she can get a similar result

Great 1st set so far, Laura absolutely destroying Oudin's 2nd serve. About to serve for the set at 5-2.

Laura wins the 1st set 6-2. I wouldn't say she is playing great but she is serving very well and doing enough to beat Oudin comfortably in that set.
