I'm so pleased for Jamie, he deserves it with the bad luck he had getting that serious illness just when he was beginning to make his mark. I hope he has some luck in who he gets to play in the first round - I haven't had time to check the draw to see who is possible.
It's especially nice to have some good news this morning - I have to tell you I am going through a difficult time as my husband had a stroke yesterday, and I will not be able to be on the Forum as much as usual. Not that you will probably notice, I haven't been posting so much recently, but I was on the Forum several times a day reading the threads and that won't be possible for a few months, I don't think.

Very sorry to hear that Madeline. I hope your husband makes a full recovery.
This is super stuff. Still only 26 and the way in which the current trend in the men's tour, by all means his best years can be ahead. Good for him financially as well.
Rosol has been hot/cold for a while now anyway. Let's just pray he's not hot 'cause we all know what he can do when he is.
Great result for Jamie and not a bad R1 draw. Pretty poor from Wardy.
IMHO that's a little bit unfair on Wardy.
I felt Jamie might have a better chance than James in the FQR. Reister's ranking doesnt do justice to his playing record (presume he's been dealing with injuries).
Jan - all four attempts got posted but treated as spam, which was my fault because I put a short link in the post you were quoting (I had to approve my own original post too) - I've approved the longest one and deleted the other three, hope that's ok.

Ah that's fine - I did think I must be doing something wrong, but when it happened several times I was confused! Now you mention it I do remember reading something a while ago about quoting posts that included links - but I would never have thought of that as the reason! Thanks Steven!

Anyway, really enjoyed watching Jamie!
It is a cast iron rule of the forum that technical problems are always Steven's fault
Looking at it from the point of view of Homo Economicus, I at first thought that Jamie Baker must have been barking mad to play in the Aussie Open qualies.
Assume that someone ranked 246 has a 30% chance of winning his first match, 25% for his second, and 20% for his third. That gives him a 1.5% chance of qualifying, and picking up $20,800 as a first round loser, and maybe a 0.2% chance of another $12,500 for getting to the 2nd round. An expected out-turn of $337 (£220) on costs of say £2,500.
But since they brought in prize money for qualifying, the expected out-turn on the above percentages adds another $4,145, to make a total of $4,782 (c£3,200). Enough to turn a small profit, and therefore actually not particularly irrational ...

A bonus for those of you who weren't up early this morning - footage of most of Jamie Baker's 3rd set v Donald Young can be found on youtube at http://bit.ly/ZGxh0a - or just the final game from 4:38:37 and the post-match interview from 4:44:11

I cant seem to open this link?
No bit.ly links have been working for the last hour or so (a temporary server glitch, I assume) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqsASFSxrwg should work, with the coverage starting in the 2nd game of the 3rd set at about 4:10:24.
