How do we compare to Spain in terms of challengers?

see my earlier post Drew, Spain has 5 (2 more than us in 2013 we think) plus 3 ATP tournaments (1 more, excluding the GS)

I wonder if they have been sacrificed in order to fund the promotion of Birmingham WTA to a Premier event.

Doubt it, there's barely any extra cost of running the tournament as a Challenger than as a 10K, other than the extra prize money which isn't much compared to Tour Level events.

I looked up the British tour earlier today, and they are now holding 4 more BT events, so claiming there is a futures or BT in every week of the year bar 2 I think between Jan and Nov, and 25 weeks where there is a BT event and another event.

Fitzy has managed to get a piece on the Sporting Life site today:

That piece has kicked off a lengthy thread with some amazingly sensible contributions smile on MTF.

Just seen an article confirming that BOTH Bath AND Loughborough Challengers habe been dropped for 2013, leaving a grand total of 2 in the UK, both on grass in Nottingham during the early Summer. This exacerbates the problems discussed earlier in the thread. Surely we need more of a balanced approach.

I just made a post which seems to have disappeared into the BT 'net'

It was to say that the article about Fitzy and Futures has prompted a lengthy (and surprisingly sensible) thread on MTF.

Oh FFS, Loughborough has gone as well. My already low opinion of the LTA and that egregious **** Roger Draper has sunk to ever greater depths.

His tax-bill alone would be enough to fund both these challengers and a few futures too.

I would say far more about this deplorable piece of **** but I wouldn't want to place myself, and our host, in potential legal difficulties. Needless to say I regard him as a cancer on British tennis, the quicker that he is cut out the better.

The sad thing is I immediately wonder as to the motives.

Because the culture at the top of the LTA seems so much about what looks best for the LTA even if that may conflict with what is actually best for British tennis and / or British tennis players.

That culture seems to flow from one man.

Speaking of which, the LTA has in the last couple of days posted behind the scenes videos of the Aegon Classic and International proudly on the website and youtube. Basically full of middle class white tennis club types, mostly women, enjoying themselves smugly drinking champagne!!!! I lost count of the number of shots of champaigne bottles or flutes. In other words, trying to replicate the feel of Wimbledon and Queens, rather than, say, the WTF. I think it is precisly the opposite of what the LTA needs to be promoting to the public and new players alike.
