RE: Week 2 - WTA International ($235K) - Hobart, Australia Hard

Laura's match is 3rd on Centre Court, with matches starting at 11pm GMT - so in the middle of the night, but might time in well to finish just as Andy's final starts.

I have to get up early on Sunday too, so it's going to be a trade off between tennis or sleep.

Their twiiter feed talks about live streaming for the centre court, but not accessible per website.
I'll be up following the NFL wildcard games so time is OK.

Not the best start, though a lucky net chord at deuce helped Stephens

Following the heatwave there are bush fires all over Tasmania producing great clouds of smoke. 80 buildings have been destroyed in a community east of Hobart.

grim stuff. perhaps at the AO they can do another 'rally for relief' event? they went down well and helped raise good money for relief in oz in past years

A patchy display from Laura. Didn't appear to be match sharp. Most of the break points were lost by Robson with careless play though Stephens did save a couple with good serves. Tiebreak started with a df then Robson wasted a great chance firing a backhand down the line wide, later two more horrible backhands made it 1-5 then 4-6. A crazy number of soft errors, pushing aggressive shots wide, routine forehands long, backhands into the net. Positives were high first serve percentage and lots of unreturned first serves, especially in the 2nd set, enabling her to hold serve 9 times out of 11. Landed several aggressive backhand returns but only one on the forehand. Movement still a weakness; seemed very slow to react when Sloane was serving and struggled to keep the ball in court when asked to hit shots on the run. Low balls landing near the service line proved a problem throughout, she tried several different responses including drop shots but never found a solution. Neither forehand nor backhand were working well. Behind her 2nd serve Laura managed to win just one point that wasn't due to an unreturned serve. For some reason her first groundstroke after her 2nd serve couldn't find the target at all. Think Laura struggled with the wind in the 2nd set; her aggressive approach leaves little margin for error if the ball isn't quite where she expects it to be.

It was a match that an on-form Robson could have won without too much difficulty. Stephens was very reliant on Robson errors to hold serve in the opening set though she gifted Robson the break back in the 2nd. Several of Laura's shots would have been winners had they landed 3 inches closer. Robson had 40-15 in the opening service game in which she was broken and two game points in the game in which she was broken in the 2nd set; both times she missed a shot that would have allowed her to hold. Apart from being fast around the court, I didn't think that Sloane was that impressive on the day though her approach was perhaps sensible given the windy conditions; a few aces, some decent defence and the occasional big groundstroke. A lucky netcord return winner set up bp when she broke Laura's serve in the opening game. To her credit, Sloane refused to donate any points after Laura had gifted her an early lead in the tie-break and she served well to close out the first set.

Laura has got a week to prepare for the Aus Open and she really needs it to get her groundstrokes functioning to a reasonable level. The dominant backhand crosscourt that she deployed in the US Open has only been seen a couple of times during the two matches I've watched, while the bh down the line shot is regularly crashing into the net. Somehow she needs to find a way to play decent tennis on the big points; during her two defeats this season her level on bps has been way below that of other points. Could do with an easy first round so she can build some momentum and nice fast conditions with very little wind. A first round exit in Melbourne would hardly be a great surprise right now but if she can fine-tune a few things then she might have a chance of doing ok.

Unreturned serves (including aces) R 30 - S 21
Points won in 3 shots or less (forced errors on 4th shot count, unforced don't) R 52 - S 42
Winners (not including aces) R 16 - S 12
Aggressive shots that resulted in forced errors R 15 - S 9
Unforced errors (not including unreturned 2nd serves) R 40 - S 17

Official match stats:

First serve percentage R 69 - S 65

Percentage won behind 1st/2nd R 78/28 - S 73/53

Aces/dfs R 2/5 - S 4/2

BPs saved R 1/3 - S 5/6

Suarez-Navarro keeps saving Match points, but Laura should be up fairly soon.

Yup Crosby, Stills & Nash sang a bit off key today & Govortsova beat her easily and quickly, so Laura up very soon

Thought Laura might be on shortly 'cos Govortsova had match point but she's struggling to finish it off and Suarez Navarro had a break point just. BUT they're done now!

So, Laura will be on quite soon to play Sloane Stephens - might even be done and dusted before Muzzah's Final.
;)

Bet365 odds Stevens 1/2 Laura 6-4. A bit surprised at that to be honest

That's odd they now seem to be using the live stream to replay the Govortsova match.
