Andy may be due to play Tipsy in the exo in Abu Dhabi in the next few minutes, but the proper season starts at midnight our time tonight, with this match first on Court 10:

QR1: Johanna Konta WR 156 v (q4) María Teresa Torró Flor (ESP) WR 98 (CH 95 in Oct)

These two met once in a grade 3 junior ITF on clay in Spain back in 2007, Jo winning 2 & 2 in the semi-finals on her way to the title.

If this was on clay I would be very pessimistic but as its on hard very optimistic.

Interesting first match to start the 2013 season and JoKo's first full season representing GB. Away from clay Torró Flor is probably the most beatable of the top 100 so JoKo has a good chance, but I would only make her a slight favourite.

As in their meeting in juniors in 2007, Torró-Flor gets just 4 games and JoKo starts the season with an immediate top 100 scalp!

Wow if ever a scoreline didn't represent the toughness of a match. I can't imagine they'll ever be many cases of a player saving 11/11 break points. Winning those key points just seemed to demolish her opponents resolve, to set up a very solid 6-3 6-1 win.

Not sure what we can take from that win, other than JoKo showing loads of guts and raising her game when it mattered.
