This year's Junior Orange Bowl under 14s has a strong entry including 4 top Brits, whilst Katie Swan and Chelsea Samways have negotiated the first 2 rounds of qualifying. Please note that by tradition the 8th and 17th seeds are joint (16 of the latter).
In the under 12s Francesca Jones has drawn a familiar name - unlike her sister Sesil, Gabriel still represents Bulgaria. The main draw starts Monday
Under 14 R1 (L128)
(17) Gabriella Taylor (GBR) v Naho Suzuki (JPN)
Andrea Chavarria (CRI) v (3) Jazzi Plews (GBR)
Anastasia Mikheeva (GBR) v (17) Camila Vargas Gomez (PER)
Maria Turrillo (VEN) v (8) Maia Lumsden (GBR)
Under 12 R1 (L128)
(Q) v Odette J Beagrie (GBR)
Francesca Jones (GBR) v Gabriel Karatantcheva (BGR)
Sesil may have a 100% record against Brits (on the Pro Circuit at least), but her record doesn't appear to have rubbed off on Gabriel fortunately. In case anyone doesn't realise in the under 12s there are 16 joint top seeds, and frankly their selection involves a lot of guesswork
Under 12 R1 (L128)
(Q) Ekaterina Vinnik (RUS) d. Odette J Beagrie (GBR) 6-2 6-1 Francesca Jones (GBR) d. Gabriel Karatantcheva (BGR) 6-0 6-3
R2
Francesca Jones (GBR) v (1) Dayana Dastremska (UKR)
Jazzi will be looking to avenge a defeat to her French opponent at Les Petits As in the next round
Under 14 R2
(17) Gabriella Taylor (GBR) d. Ryan Peus (USA) 6-1 6-1 (3) Jazzi Plews (GBR) d. May Kimhi (ISR) 6-4 6-0 (LL) Leyla Azaeva (RUS) v (8) Maia Lumsden (GBR)
R3
(7) Siqi Cao (CHN) v (17) Gabriella Taylor (GBR) (17) Theo Gravouil (FRA) v (3) Jazzi Plews (GBR) (17) Rafaella Baquerizzo (ECU) v (LL) Leyla Azaeva (RUS) or (8) Maia Lumsden (GBR)
Maia won her R3 match yesterday in straight sets, Jazzi lot hers in straight sets including a bagel! Still Maia and Gabriella left in.
Jazzi has had a brilliant year until her US swing at the end, where she didn't keep up the momentum of the previous 6-8 months, when she swept allcomers assunder upto and including G3.
In the US she didn't make much of a dent at the Grade 1 and Grade A U18 Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl tournaments. Then at U14 level went out prematurely (for her seeding) at both the Nike and OBJ tournaments. Hopefully just a lull. In a way it's nice to see Maia and Gabriella performing, because all 3 have played together in GB tournaments and all 3 have big potential, but Jazzi had somewhat stolen a march this year. Healthy competition between 3 world standard players MUST be a good thing for all of them in the long run.
Still waiting on first results from today's R4 (L16) matches.
Jazzi disappointed in the US a little bit at this stage last year. Could be that or could be that she is a confidence player where a couple of losses have derailed her form a little bit, or could be something completely different.
