RE: The new WTA website

Hi IF,

I've just taken another look on the WTA website, trying to get GB ranking information, and tournament info. They don't seem to have sorted alot of it. Have you any other pointers (or has anyone else for that matter) for websites where I can now get that information?

Many thanks,
Helen.

Argh! The ATP now have a new livescoreboard which needless to say is more cumbersome and harder to follow/use than the original. I mention it on this thread because it does give options to LS the WTA events but if you click on one of them you have to start all over again to get the ATP ones.
Why couldn't they leave well alone.
HUMPH!!!

How they have the nerve to try and claim it is an improvement, I don't know, but the ITF was the same - not quite as bad, i.e. they did make some changes - but the site is still much harder to use than it used to be.

The myriad downgrades/problems with the rankings pages are completely indefensible and have generated loads of complaints on the forums - I just hope enough people will complain when the new season properly starts (which is the first time most people will even notice) to force them to rethink, though I won't hold my breath.

I totally agree, and as daisy says they've done something terrible to livescore, which I now can't get into.  furious

I rather like the new board, you can get completed, live scores, draws and schedules all on same page. there's a chance at top left to select tournament, and that takes you to the complete choice of atp and wta ones - however word of warning re the draws - they don't seem to like spaces for qualifiers, and just miss them out making the remainder of the draw incorrect!

The problem I have is that once you load up your tournament of choice you can't flip to and fro' the others to check scores at other events.  You have to either go back and select another tourney or have more than one livescore window open.

On the old LS board it was much easier to click on other live tourneys to get information about scores/finished matches and that also offered a link to each tournament home page for further information.

I guess it's hard to get these things right and in a way to suit everyone.  Thankfully another poster on here has pointed me in the direction of the old LS board.

Another problem, for me at any rate, on the new WTA website: they no longer have an easily copy-and-pastable results page (you can copy and paste but it all has to be reformatted) and the schedule is only in PDF. I used to copy and paste these two pages for another board. Now I think they will just get a link!

Agree with you there Madeline - it's a pain to have to type stuff out.
The ATP did the same during the course of last year and it's a right nuisance.
Not exactly fan friendly ... (or forum friendly then).

You'd think the ATP, WTA and ITF would want to make it as easy as possible for those who want to 'spread the word' by distilling the info on their site to make it easier for special interest groups (like fans from a particular country) to use, wouldn't you.

Instead, they seem to want to discourage people from doing that, presumably with the aim of getting as many hits on their own sites as possibe. It may make their site stats look a tiny bit better, but taking a longer-term view, it seems like a very short-sighted approach.

The ATP is not a problem as they will send daily emails to those who ask for them, and they can be copy-and-pasted. If the WTA offer a similar service I haven't found it!

I suspect that is the aim but it could well backfire. The WTA site is now so hard to use to find the results that one wants it is likely to drive fans into using a small number of fan based sites that are prepared to do the work to collect the data that fans need.

Well I only hope that this forum is one of them cos I certainly won't be bothered to look down loads of rankings for all our girls on a regular basis if I've got to go through pages of irrelevant data each time.

Someone has found that the old WTA site still exists at http://origin-www.wtatennis.com (and the rankings are even getting updated on it) ... I doubt it will continue to exist for much longer, but it would have saved me a few minutes getting the rankings into all the stats tables an hour ago if I had known, so it's probably worth using while we still can.

Wonderful, happily bookmarked, long may it last!

Still no facility to get a list by country though, which is the main thing I need

Apart from that, it's now similar to the way it was before but, as you say, looks much worse. Impressive stuff! disbelief
