I think Jess Ennis's likeability factor and "face of the games" stuff actually makes some people underestimate how good she actually is. I have read quite a lot of negative stuff about her in other forums.
To put her Olympics performance in some context...
This was likely her only Olympic shot at the Heptathlon, having missed Beijing due to injury and unlikely to carry on with it until Rio ( and she has since said that she will almost certainly be concentrating just really on the 100m Hurdles then, where she is already world class while not really specifically concenteating on it ), and having the added pressure of it being in London, and her being not just favourite for the event, but the "face of the games" whether she liked it or not.
She then produced a performance which included 3 personal bests in the 7 events, was a British record and took her to 5th place on the all time world list of Heptathlon competitors. Plus only one person had ever accumulated more points in an Olympics Heptathlon, the world record holder, Jacqui Joyner-Kersee ( and there is shall we say certain speculation in some quarters re her performances ).
The more I considered it, the more I actually thought she deserved to be right up there ( just behind Andy ) Personally, I absolutely disagree that she didn't deserve to be top 4 or 5, although it is always going to bring out a great range of thoughts weighing up performances in such different sports with different depths and levels of competition.

I think you have to take into account that it was a fast track so fast times and bigger points were more likely. Denise Lewis achieved a similar feat in 2000 although without the pressure.
I would still put her behind Wiggins, Andy, Farah and Weir but as you say Indy it all comes down to ones personal views.
Jess showing her huge popularity not just in this country was the most googled female athlete in 2012 with 29 million searches, Serena Williams was miles back in second with only 16 million.
The only other GB sports lady to make the list was Vicky Pendleton in 25th.
If you think Andy may be upset at only reaching 3rd place, why not roll around on the floor laughing at spare a thought for the Aussie's: one of their newspapers has just named a Racehorse as sportswoman of the year.

Some people were suggesting Frankel should have been included in our SPOTY.
Mind you the racehorse in question was a once in a lifetime horse but still.
I'm outraged that Boggo wasn't even considered for this. Forget the Olympics, the US Open and the Tour de France - ITF Futures are not as easy as they look.
