Doping Again !

There are a number of benefits to regular use of inhalers for Asthma, it is no coincidence that so many successful athletes use them. There should be much more careful and centralised monitoring of this ie. by assigned respiratory physicians (although that probably puts Norwich out of the equation as a centre of sporting excelence, I remember a newspaper piece describing how they had failed to recruit respiratory physicians from Bangalore to go and work at the Norfolk and Norwich) as opposed to their local doctor.

Not many elite athletes have bad asthma, many probably do not have a justifiable reason for using both a reliever and a preventer. For the most part it is a chronic condition that is amenable to more centralised assessment and meticulous monitoring. Tougher disease specific guidelines around the pathophysiological criteria for therapeutic use would level the playing field.

Additionally I am certain that there is something that can be done about the formulations of both preventer and relievers used by athletes as there is a strong suggestion that the propellant confers an advantage not just the steroid/beta 2 agonist.

Great to see the rise of the British men through 2016, Marcus remains extremely lucky that the snicker fat coke combo has yet to be outlawed but I hear "the Russians" are looking very carefully at it indeed forget the Meldonium, Sharapova is hiding her sweet tooth in plain sight.

I am sure it is multi factorial but has Dan's stamina improved or has others dipped? Back on the Judy Oakes becaming a world class shot putter following the outing of Eastern European athletes and systematic steroid use theme. But, analysis of trends around 5 set performances particular the distances run and outcome compared against retrospective data from previous seasons could be very revealing.

In the long run Dan is still really stuffed as Bank's bitter, Balti pies and pork scratchings will inevitably make the band list.

Autocorrect is dangerous: I am waiting for a band named "Bank's Bitter, Balti Pies and Pork Scratchings" Like the ring of it actually ...

Jesting aside, I am really cross about the way the media are treating this. As I understand it, there are no 'revelations' at all from the WADA hacking, certainly on the tennis side. Some athletes have medical conditions. They've needed to take things that are generally banned - which includes a vast array of fairly garden variety medications. They've had an exemption for a specific reason. They've taken the medicine. That's it. Yet on my way into the office today, I saw the back page of a newspaper that said "Williams Sisters in Drug Row" Read the article and it makes it clear that there has been no wrongdoing. But the headline is misleading and unfair and deliberate ... well... click-bait or whatever the equivalent term is for print. And this is a gift to those who want to suggest a world of moral ambiguity, where 'everyone does it, but only the Russians get caught'. No. That's not the case. The newspaper in question, moreover, unlike other more responsible sources, has printed the details of what they took. Why? Why give information that's been hacked from someone's private medical records?

In the case of Venus Williams, it's particularly offensive, given that she has Sjogren's Syndrome. It would be rather stunning if she didn't have take some medications beyond the norm, banned or otherwise.

The most startling fact about Russians at seemingly all levels is not the extent of the institutionalised doping ( awful as that has been ) but the almost total lack of contrition.

It was the Para chief that effectively said they just don't 'get it' and until they do come to accept that it just isn't about whatever it takes, but try and not get caught, they should have no expectation of competing in the world's sporting arenas. Though no doubt in most cases they will.

Sharapova's ban reduced to 15 months. Can return on the 26th of April.

Presumably the WTA won't give her a protected ranking, although I certainly wouldn't rule it out with the people in charge who seem to be cheerleaders for her.

If not it will be interesting to see if either the French or Wimbledon give her a WC or if she has to start from the bottom again.

I see Martina Navratilova felt it was too long. Why?

Saw a disgusting ad from Head congratulating themselves for standing by her. It's not like she was declared innocent, she is still a cheat and was proven to be so. Won't be wasting my money on any Head products in future.

Agree totally.  I see Kyle's dad called them out on this and politely asked them to "take a look in the mirror".

I also see that at least one tournament - Prague - is jumping at the chance to offer her a WC.  Unfortunately her marketing value will no doubt outway the moral value for the smaller tournaments looking to attract spectators.  I hope the Slams take a tougher view and that she has to work her way back up the rankings and get in on merit.

Will be interesting to see if any of the British grass tournaments offer her a wild card (would obviously be a big draw for Nottingham) , and whether the LTA takes a moral stance and leans on them not too.

I agree with Bob she shouldn't be given a helping hand.

I'm finding it all pretty disgusting to be blunt. History is being revised piece by piece.

"Brave warrior Sharapova discusses her return to the full WTA schedule in 2017" - WTA - WTA for God's sake! 32 minutes after the decision came through they put this piece up. Which implies somehow she has been brave and is the wronged party, and that the return to playing the full calendar next year is a mere formality, a fait accomplis. There's also been two mentions of the confectionery range already on other stories. They couldn't wait.
We all read the full judgement, this is whitewashing.

It's everywhere, like the Head statement noted by others earlier, poor Maria. It has apparently been agreed as the narrative, a poor victim of a vexatious witch hunt by shadowy adversaries unknown, and is going to let everyone know that she feels aggrieved.
BBC: "Sharapova: International Tennis Federation tried to make example of me"
ESPN: "Networks hail Sharapova's reduced ban."
CBS News: "Maria Sharapova is adamant that the reduced ban is still too harsh, and that she has still been treated unfairly"
etc etc

I really don't think the tour has missed her one bit this year. Vika yes having started so amazingly well, Serena's inactivity, yes. But not Maria, the grunting, special pleading, and everything else that goers along with her.

Abolutely a top priority for an athlete - you are responsible for ensuring that what you take is allowable.

So she just leaves that all to her agent and none of the rest of her team even knew she took this. She isn't even getting banned for any of the clear doubt as to why she was taking it at all, but for the terrible dereliction of duty as an athlete resulting her taking a then banned substance.

Still quite amusing that the one defense that subsequently might have had legs, it still being in her system from before the ban, she knocked out from the get go by basically admitting she took it this year by supposed.oversight.

She hadn't been picked on, just all the other athletes didn't come out and hold a press conference basically admitting their guilt of taking a substance banned at the time.

That's what you did, Maria, count yourself lucky that CaS actually says you're not a cheat ( so you don't need to keep saying that you're not ) and indeed from the evidence the original ITF punishment of being effectively the top end ban for accidentally  ( they too never concluded "cheat" ) taking a banned substance seemed fair, given the lack of steps to avoid it happening. If deliberate banned use had been proved the ban would have been much more. Luckily for you you are not banned for all the circumstantial stuff and what many are thinking.

Shut up and serve you're reduced ban.

The fancy bears hack of WADA data for athletes participating in Rio does seem to have picked up anything too controversial from a tennis perspective. Definitely no Requests for continuation of Meldonium use on medical grounds following it being placed on the band list!

Rafa had a couple for steroids injections for knee injuries that were obviously impacting him and needed treatment and his exemptions were consistent with apropriate treatment.

The Williams sisters also had exemptions for meds that don't appear significantly suspicious. Little bit dubious about the need for opiates, there are some pretty potent non steroidal anti-inflammatory alternatives but again long term use can have unacceptable side effects are some people are allergic. Has anybody seen anything that would be a cause for concern?

Nothing like the Triamcinalone stick with which Bradley Wiggins is being beaten where there are strong grounds to ban its use in and out of competition because of its capacity to facilitate the development of a stronger leaner athlete.

As predicted Evo has a number for strictly most Friday's and Saturday nights between 2010 and jan 2015 when ever inside the Balti triangle (M42/5/6) or more specifically on the Hagley Rd to be taken with mates after 18:00 for Red Bull, Grey Goose and Bathams all on an empty stomach. Marcus of course has his Snicker exemption, three daily unrestricted until 2014.

I would love to see him change racket sponsor as and when his present contract is up.

I am not aware of any other brand taking such a cynical approach to mitigating the impact of sanctions for using a performance enhancing drug. Surely they must aspire to a clean sport in order to attract children and their parents to it. Gobsmacked!

For me the performances of Sharipova in the future will just be a constant reminder of what is bad about professional sport.

Be glad you haven't been averse of the WTA tours fawning coverage of her upcoming return; every WC she is awarded treated with giddy, gushing rapture; every off court training video puffed.
She is still a currently banned athlete. The tour should not endorse her, at the very, very, very, least, during the period of her ban.
I'm sure day one of her return will bring a resumption of the countless adverts for her confectionery line and her sponsors in the WTA coverage.

Another hagiographic piece of revisionist history from the WTA again today; a puff piece entitled: "'Tennis Needs Maria' - Sharapova's Rivals Relish Her Return - Maria Sharapova's rivals are ready and waiting for her return. WTA Insider Courtney Nguyen reports from the All-Access Hour in Indian Wells."

NB: Sharapova is still a banned athlete.
