Won't Ahn have played extensively at American College level, so given that she was a good junior if not the very best, a very tough opponent nonetheless.

Good point if much of the time she was playing college tennis as opposed to being injured ot otherwise unable to play.
TennisForum reporting that a LL spot became available, but Sam didn't get it. I had been thinking she was first in line, but apparently it's a draw for LL spots in ITF tournaments. Any more, please ?

Yes, LL spots are allocated by ranking in events run by the WTA and ATP (i.e. including Challengers) but by a random draw in Futures, women's ITFs and slams.
