it so hard what to think at the moment - he's able to go toe to toe with top 200 guys, but he just cant seem to get things going. 1 last chance for the year next week, it's asking a lot tho.

That does seem to be what the problem is. It's so frustrating when he shows he can play like he's the higher-ranked of the two by miles but then ends up losing. Goodness knows how frustrating it must be for Alex himself.
