I was there today. The courts seemed very fast and suited to players with big shots and fast serve. Little Grigelis was blown away by Ashley Hewitt.
Richard Bloomfield served well and Tom Burn had no answer to his powerful shots. Under pressure he made a lot of errors and ended up smashing his racket 5 times )almost the highlight of the day!) After this Tom looked dispirited and seemed to want the match to end which it duely did.
David Rice should have won against Dan Evans in another power victory. He had 2 match points in the final set tiebreak only for Dan to somehow hang on and turn it round to win. He really does know how to pump himself up at key moments and he is a gutsy player who has more guile than your average Brit. He will have to be at his best all the time to win against the bigger hitters here though.
Jamie Baker seemed to have an easy task on paper against big serving Dutchman Yannick Ebbinghaus, over a thousand places below him in the rankings. After a good start even he had problems. A break down in the second set he somehow clawed it back to win in straight sets, but the power of the Dutchman caused him many problems.
As to an eventual winner it would seem Josh Goodall and Seb Knittel are the ones to watch. Bloomers match with Baker tomorrow will show if he can join them.
Grigelis hasn't been in great form recently (hence the rapid slide from a career high of 183 just 3 months ago to WR 396 now, but he beat WR 570 in R1 and qualified for the Challenger in Rennes last week, beating WR 326 in straight sets in the FQR, so that's an excellent win for Ashley and not the first time he has played at a level way above his ranking.
H2Hs for the QFs are:
Josh 1-0 v Ashley (Bath last year, but it went to 3 sets) Evo 4-0 v Neil (including 2 this year) Alex 0-1 v Knittel Bloomers 1-0 v Jamie (but it was 6 years ago)
