Anne saves several set points but eventually loses the first set 6-4.

Hard to see her winning this now - you don't get too many comebacks from a set down by players guaranteed a lucky loser spot.

Ack!
I hope Annie can win it though, a good tough comeback would be much better for her self-belief.

Anne rebreaks but a double fault leaves her 0-30 down in her next service game and despite saving break points to get to deuce, she eventually gets broken for the 5th time in the match

4-6 2-2*

Shame Anne couldn't qualify for the singles by right! cry

Doubles:

R1:  Kiki Bertens & Arantxa Rus (NED/NED) vs Anne Keothavong & Andreja Klepac (SLO)

Pretty good R1 MD draw for Annie as a LL. She'll be playing Bertens in singles and doubles.

[LL] KEOTHAVONG Anne (GBR) 83 vs. BERTENS, Kiki (NED) 60
Anne leads the H2H 2-0 both times in straight sets 4 & 2:
2011 Barnstaple R32, Hard (AK: [3] 91 Bertens: 196)
2011 Ismaning SF, Carpet (AK: [3] 89 Bertens 199)

Since Wimbledon, Kiki has been in decent, but unspectaular form (but certainly better than Annie).
She normally wins a round or two, Montreal being her best week, as Q+R32 beating Petrova in 3 tight sets in R64. She also beat McHale at USO, and Barthel last week in Linz.

A chance for Annie, but Kiki a pretty strong favourite unfortunately.

Winner to play #1 seed Vinci in R2 hmm

Anne's only scheduled for doubles tomorrow though, at 16:00 UK time.

The Dutch girls were a break up after the first game! cry  0-2*  I had a feeling it was going to be a tough one...

You're right, Shhh, they did.  Just realised my mistake & came back on to correct it (misread the scoreboard... ashamed ).  That said they lost the MTB by 6-10. cry

Decent effort from Anne & Andreja.
Thought it would be close, as, though good singles players, the two Dutch girls hardly play doubles. So, despite the apparent disparity, I saw the rankings as sort of even:

Anne & Andreja: 700
Singles: 512 (83 + 429)
Doubles: 188 (112 + 76)

Kiki & Arantxa: 738
Singles: 126 (60 + 66)
Doubles: 612 (252 + 360)

Hopefully revenge will be swift for Annie, in the singles over Bertens tomorrow.
