Week 41 - WTA ($220K) - Linz, Austria - Indoor Hard

No sign of JoKo, who was apparently on the original qualies list, but instead the return of Anne Keothavong after her foot injury:

QR1: (q3) Anne Keothavong WR 80 v Maria Elena Camerin (ITA) WR 164 (CH 41 in 2004)

H2H 2-1 - Anne thrashed her in Kraków in 2008, beat her in 3 in Memphis in 2010 then lost to her in straight sets in Monzón in 2010.

Good to see that Anne has recovered from injury. She has lots of points to defend in the coming weeks though so she needs to hit form quickly.

Anne is on 2nd, so about 10.30 UK time.

Yes, I was looking forward to Johanna stepping up to a $220K, as she had remarked on Twitter on 20th September, after losing in Shrewsbury:

Home for a night before heading back to the ntc for 2 weeks training. Next up will be Linz! #trainingtime

Perhaps having seen the quality of the field she thought again about it.

She might try the Luxembourg event in week 42 instead?

She has just 6 points to defend until the end of the year, and has already made good progress this year, so maybe she's mostly focused on a hard training winter and an all out assault come January. If so, then there'd just be a few more, relatively, minor outings this year.

Yes. Though, I do hope she's not pushing it too soon because she know the huge totals she has to defend.

I fear a little for her, she's not won a match at all since Wimbledon.

Jeremy Bates insists she's playing really well, and is on the verge of something good. To be fair to her, she played very well in the second half (having been awful in the first set) of a spirited fightback I watched in Dallas against Erakovic, before allowing some very dubious line calls to rattle her towards the end and slide to defeat. Generally though, the signs haven't been great.

As for her chances of finishing the year in the top 100 for the fourth year out of the last 5; well, as far as I can see, perhaps The Royalettes said it best...

1st set to Anne, 6-4 from 1-4 down

Anne may have only won 23% of points behind her second serve with 4 doubles, but that compares favourably to her opponent's 6 DFs and 18% points won on 2nd serve.

Breakfest in Linz with Camerin taking an early lead by holding once but Anne has come back with a couple of holds to lead 5-4*

The second hold proves sufficient for the set as Camerin throws in a couple of doubles

6-4 0*-0

Remarakble turnaround from Annie there 1-4 to 6-4, clearly getting rid of the cobwebs before turning on the after burners.

Needs quite a turnaround again or it's going to a third set.   * 0 - 4  cry

I think her afterburners have used up all her gas. Serving at 0-4 and about to be broken again.

That was short and not so sweet    0 - 6.     Time for a regroup me thinks.

Anne stops the rot by saving a breakpoint and winning the game with her second ace

6-4 0-6 1-0*
