RE: Week 41 - WTA ($220K) - Osaka, Japan - Hard

Parmentier haviing just openend up the bottom half of the draw by beating second seed Zheng Jie 4 & 3 means that if Heather can just get through this next match, she has a decent chance at a first WTA semi.

However, I find this upcoming match very hard to call. AMG is that rarest of Spaniards, one who claims to prefer hard courts to clay (despite having won 10 of her 11 WTA titles on clay!).

Most of her hard court defeats this year have come against the top 30 players, often better still.

But defeats to Hradecka (69) at USO, and Parmentier (62) in Paris show the right player in Heather's ranking zone has a chance.

If only Heather had the booming serve that those two have, I'd make her a decent favourite.

As it is, I think it's gonna be very close. Let's find out...

Cheers for the info. And I see you're living up to your name!

I haven't seem that much of AMG,but from what I remember, she is similar to Hev, in that she's tenacious and doesn't give up on anything.

Should be a close one

Great wins from the superkids today I make this only the 2nd time this century that GB has had two women in the QFs of the same WTA event, the other being Memphis 2010 (Bally and Anne), Heather's 4th WTA QF (1st this year) and Laura's <edit> 3rd this year after Palermo & Guangzhou.

Ah, interesting, I nearly posted earlier as to how long it had been since we had two together in a WTA QF. Not quite as long as I maybe thought, but then it seems just that one other time this century

By the way re Laura, *cough*,  Guangzhou.   ( oh, as IF said )

Seems i joined in at a great point to see Hev looking certain now to win this match. ( But as I type that she goes 15 - 30 down ).

Game 8: Not plain sailing to victory, perhaps nerves, as at *30-40, AMG forces her first BP since the sixth game of Set 2. Heather saves that one, but another arrives from the deuce point, also creditably saved. But Heather can't create a match point yeet, as AMG gets a 3rd BP in this game from deuce 2, and that one is taken.
Surprise break, completely against the run of play. Heather will be kicking herself, but she has the cushion, and another chance to serve it out at worst.
5-3*

Game 9: A hold for Anabel here would really put the frighteners on. Heather has had regular pressure this set on AMG's serve though, and more of the same here, at 30-15*. That set's up 2 match points for Miss Watson at 40-15*. Go on! First one gone... 2nd serve for the second MP... but no, it slips by too!
A third MP, from deuce 2, but classy stuff from AMG, with an Ace to save it!
MP #4 from deuce 3... Yes!
6-3

GSM Heather

Good, come from behind win from Heather, she served very well throughout - wait to read match report to see what the injury was, to whom, and what effect if any it had.

R2: WATSON, Heather (GBR) 71 defeated MEDINA GARRIGUES, Anabel (ESP) [6] 40 (4)6-7 6-2 6-3
QF: WATSON, Heather (GBR) 71 vs. PARMENTIER, Pauline (FRA) 73

Tough, on fast courts against Pauline's big serve, but, still, definitely winnable. A first WTA semi-final is there for the asking.

Phew ... very scary in the end but great win from Hev and a good chance against Parmentier to make the SF ... must be honest didn't think she would get past Hercog never mind have a very good chance at the semi so im very happy with that result ... now for Robbo to make it two for two tonight

I think Heather is guaranteed a new CH of ~63 with that win. Well played, and hoping for even more.

Laura up next, but having not slept since Monday, even I may well fall asleep.
