RE: Week 40 - ATP 500 - Tokyo, Japan (Indoor Hard)

Very dangerous first round match. Needs to be sharp or it could be an early exit.

Andy seems to have a habit of getting dangerous floaters who are underranked because of having been out for injury. Still, the H2H is 3:2 to Andy, 2:1 on hard, though Gael won their last encounter in Paris (Bercy) in 2010.

perhaps this was mentioned elsewhere, but from looking at this Andy is top seed presumably?

Karlovic should be first in line for a LL slot followed by Petzschner

Woa! Monfils has withdrawn with a knee injury (again), so Andy will play a lucky loser.

I'm reading elsewhere it will be Karlovic. Still not an easy first round match, but Andy has never had much trouble with Karlovic: H2H is 4:0

Hope Gael does get properly fit again soon, and certainly ready for a good 2013.  He does offer something different  smile

(And Lukas Lacko now lies in wait in 2nd  biggrinbiggrinbiggrin)

Tomorrow's match 3rd on Centre Court.  Probably around  breakfast time for us (depending what time you get up!)

The BBC are now reporting that Andy plays his first match in Tokyo against Lacko having been given a Bye in R1 after Monfils withdrew.  ESPN are sayng the same apparently and so is something called "Andy's blog on twitter" (which I don't know about). If anyone finds out what what's I'd be glad to know.

My theory - the BBC got an inexperienced reporter on the case, he assumed Monfils withdrawing meant an automatic bye, ESPN then reported the same thing without thinking and the 'blog' assumed the BBC must be right ... cos they never get anything wrong about tennis ... no disbelief ...

Either that or all players who lost in qualifying are either injured or have left Japan already!

P.S. Multiple French, Spanish, Italian and Brazilian sites are all reporting that Karlovic is in as the lucky loser for Monfils.

I've just checked the Rakuten Open Twitter account - its tweet about Monfils yesterday (the fourth one down on https://twitter.com/rakutenopen) leads to http://www.facebook.com/rakutenjapanopen/posts/426759004048796 where it says the replacement who will play Murray will be announced on Tuesday morning.

Perhaps the timing of Gael's withdrawal means they have to see who signs in tomorrow first or maybe there is some question mark over whether Ivo is still there and fit to play and they don't want to announce Andy's opponent until they are sure.

So it might not be Ivo, but unless there's something very odd going on, Andy won't get a bye.

Definitely Monfils is out, he is on his way back to France. The question now is, is Andy playing somebody or getting a bye into R2? It sounds from Steven's post that he will be playing somebody.  Maybe they will persuade one of the ballboys to stand in . . .
