A great effort from Heather - I watched the first two sets before going in to work and Heather's tennis was virtually flawless up to 3-4 in the second set, when maybe she started to get tired. Sharapova was either brilliant or awful with not much middle ground and Heather dealt with that very well and got on with her own game.
Unfortunately she couldn't quite get to the point where the finish line was in sight.
A lot of hard work for just 1 point, but the result although a defeat, should give her a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. I will give her a lot of credit, even if Maria won't

Incredibly gutsy effort from Hev against an opponent who was either very hot or very cold. Hev seems to love to play Maria, and Maria seems to hate to play Hev. Stats at the end re unforced errors and winners suggest a shocking match, but I thought the match at times was of very high quality and alot of those errors were forced. Hev looks back on course for the top 50 sometime within the first 6 months of next year, and the duel at the top of GB tennis is getting very exciting indeed.
Fine performance from Heather, there's no doubting her guts, tenacity or determination. Someone compared her to David Ferrer today, a high and deserved compliment.
If Heather could just add an ability to end the occasional point quickly - 8 winners in 231 points, over 3 hours is always gonna have you flagging towards the end - she'd have all the players looking to avoid her in draws. Getting her ranking high enough to get into the MD of top events by right would be a double blessing given her attritional game style. Not carrying the accumulated fatigue of Qualifying in to the early rounds would definitely give her better chances of regularly causing some upsets, and getting a few runs deeper in to tournaments.
Hopefully she can get through qualifying in Beijing, and then I think it's about time she had a nice favourable draw. Points there to add to this weeks haul could set the platform for her to end the year at a career high.

Yes, I'd think if Heather got 110 points from qualifying and getting through R1 in the main draw next week, on top of her 100 points from this week, that should be enough to get her past her CH of 67. Indeed with so little to defend the rest of the year, that in itself could well have her finish the year above that current CH.
And both her and Laura have real opportunities to significantly further improve their ranking during the first few months of next tear, given how comparatively little they have to defend.
I thought Heather played well overall. Given that Sharapova has far superior firepower, and an aggressive 2nd serve aimed at the lines, Heather didn't have that many opportunities to strike winners. At times she was perhaps guilty of not getting the ball deep enough; she caused Maria difficulties whenever the ball landed near the baseline. Her high first serve percentage kept her competitive in the opening set, assisted by Sharapova's dfs during that spell but once she began missing more first serves and started making more dfs, it became a big struggle to hold as the match progressed.
