Cracking job! Did anyone really expect this this year? Laura wasn't even born the last time we had a WTA main tour finallist.
Tough final ahead, Hsieh having been 172 at the start of the year as rocketed up the rankings by putting several good weeks together on several occasions. Won the $100K in Ningbo last week, and is dangerous. But, so is Laura
I got back as she was serving at *5-1 and dropped serve again - I thought we were in for a repeat of the first set nail-biter, but no, she got it done with a break.
Even the BBC news have been giving regular updates on the score. They pointed out that the last British girl to reach a WTA final was Jo Durie in 1990. We now need Heather to qualify and win a round or more in Tokyo then British girls will really be on the BBC agenda.
She has 200 points here, 130 to come off, and 7 to be added back in from tournaments not in her best 16 right now, so worst case, she will be +77 points at the end of the year if she doesn't play again and loses tomorrow.
Really impressive from Laura. 2 things stand out to me 1. Composure 2. Speed around the court and able to make a good hit on the ball when she is running full pelt.
Hsieh will be very tough, I think she's already won a WTA event this year so won't be nervous. Has a very awkward style, Laura prefers opponents that give her a rythym. Finally was playing very well in the bits of the semi which I saw.
On the positive side though Laura will be fresh as this match was short and the shoulder only appears to be a minor problem.
