Brilliant effort by Laura to see that out. Dug deep in the final set when the odds were against her to get another top win. Hoping for a bit of rain tomorrow to delay the semis. Fitness is clearly getting alot better but it will be tough to back up another high level performance within less than 24 hours.
Glad now she doesn't have to make a decision whether to rush off to Tokyo. It's Tokyo's fault for not giving her a MDWC. Still a week off without having totravel outside the country is probably perfect preparation for Beijing.
Anyway, what she could really do with is get that first serve % up. It was 71% in the first set ( won 62% of these points ), just 47% in the second set ( won 56% of points ) and 2 / 6 33% in the first game of the final set ( won neither of these points ).
Laura got the first serve % back up to 65% for the third set ( won 59% of these points ). Not unusually, for her and plenty others, it can be so important.
She's now covered all the 130 points from last year now so worst case scenario will finish in the top 75 by the end of the year. Could obviously go alot higher :)) I don't suspect we'll see her in Barnstaple now.
They used to call that sort of match win, 'character building'. Impressive stuff. Any other wins from now on this year are gravy for Laura, she has no more points to defend, and so can only rise in the rankings.
A friend told me that they sing a song for Laura, to the tune of 'Lollipop' by the Chordettes
Call our favourite Lolli-Rob, Tell you why, her forehand's sweeter than an apple pie And when she's hitting winners in a trance The others they don't stand a chance
62ish but she is defending 70 points from next week and obviously can't defend them so would drop if she loses the semi here, after the rankings update the following week.
