Yes, Johanna scheduled to Court 1, assuming that would get coverage. They surely would have put her on Court 2 if they knew only that court would get coverage. But, the LTA have been known to make some 'interesting' decisions, from time to time!
Uxpected loss for JoKo, who has been doing so well recently.
1 win and 10 defeats in total for the British girls here - a tournament to forget. Results here and in Guangzhou show the benefits of quality over quantity; Laura has managed more (main draw) wins by herself than all 10 brits managed here.
I wonder if being the last Brit standing and thus all the spotlight on her gave her additional pressure.
Wouldn't have thought so. I'd honestly expect her just basically to be playing for herself. And anyway "all the spotlight" in the Shrewsbury 75K is rather relative.
Shame about Johanna, especially after the convincing 2nd set comeback. Coin wasn't 60 in the world at one point for nothing though. Johanna still seems to have good potential, and I think she can consolidate her current ranking before the end of the year, by covering the 30 points she has to defend. Perhaps not to move up too much farther until next year though.
I still find her attitude impressive, dedicated and professional. Which sets her apart from some prospects we have had.
Anyone know what Johanna's schedule is for the immediate weeks, and the rest of the year in general?
The 2˝ Brit pairs also lost in doubles today. WC's Brown/Bowtell only losing 10-6 in the MTB though which was a decent effort against the fourth seeds.
In view of the huge British entry and lack of success maybe it would be better to drop this to $50K next year and add another $25K to the schedule.
That may or may not be a good idea in itself. But I think the reason is a bit kneejerk, just because it hasn't gone well at all this year
Last year in the Shrewsbury 75k, apart from Heather in the final and Anne in the QF, we had Naomi in the QF and Jo and Tara in the last 16, the last 3 ( who of course were here this year ) all beating opponents more than 100 places above them in the rankings in R1.
