R1: CARRERAS, Amanda (GBR) 4 405 v MARTÍN FERNÁNDEZ, Rocio (ESP) WC UNR (CH 1204 in Feb)

Looks like a nice easy opener, until you realise that Amanda got upset 4 & 1 by the then 16-year-old Spaniard (now 18) early last year!

Or you could spin it as: "Beat a Spaniard... on clay... in Spain!" smile

Thought the name rang a bell - Amanda beat Sussarello 3 & 2 in R1 last week.

At least the Brits are now dong the serving, rather than at the start of the week, when they were very much being force-fed!

Wasn't expecting more bakery products from this round, impessive stuff.

The 6 points she's earned so far should in themselves take Amanda above her May 2010 career high of WR 397 on Monday week.

Really solid week from Amanda, taking care of business with no sign of trouble. The manner of the QF result being especially pleasing.
Another 'W' would be some nice icing, against the first opponent ranked above her.

It's a very impressive display, nobody has taken more than 2 games off her in 3 matches, including the 5th seed.

It's nice having a clay court specialist but it means we don't often see her in the UK. Perhaps after her "Olympic torch" run she will look more favourably on events in the UK. If she is still playing 10K events next year she might like to consider playing in Bournemouth, a very nice venue and one I can get to fairly easily.
