Jo has now won more ranking points than Bally this year and, given poor Bally is out of action for a while, she must already be very likely to end the year higher ranked ( will definitely be if Bally doesn't return this year ).
But why stop now ? Another 60 on offer in R2, and given she wouild be due to play a seed in R1 or R2, potentially Paszek ( seed 29 ) is a good draw.
Her points and potential points added from Q1 through to R2 are : 40. 10. 10. 100, 60 - hmm !
I think Bally has definitely said she's taking at least 6 months off, so Jo is very likely to overtake her soon whatever happens in R2.
I thought today's win was hugely impressive - taking the 1st set against a top 60 player on the way up 6-2 and then coming back from 1-5 down in the 2nd, saving all those bps in the 8th game and then carrying that momentum through to the finish.
It would be brilliant if she jumped from outside the top 200 to inside the top 150 in one fell swoop. In yesterday's rankings, 455 points were enough for WR 149 and 'live' she's a couple of places ahead of that, so without any additional points it may be touch and go. As far as I can work out from year-end data, it is highly unlikely that there have been 5 British women in the WTA top 150 at the same time for 20 years - Durie / Javer / Smith / Gomer / Wood at the end of 1991 and hence probably for part of 1992 as well.
