RE: Weeks 35-36 - US Open Main Draw

On the basis of this week, a place in the top 100 looks to be a matter of time.

Not enough first serves in that game. Needs plenty of unreturned serves if she is to have a chance. After a super forehand on the very first point, the Robson forehand has been a bit wild in the early stages.

Pity, but encouraging that it was such a close match.

Really good hitting there by Li Na, not a lot Laura couild do while hitting pretty well herself   6 -  6

TV commentators certainly all over Li Na  !

Darn !

Such a pity these 2 second serve return misses from 3 - 2  up,  but Laura went for them and just execution let her down.  Can't fault her atttude.

Now can she find again the serve she found latterly in the second set before the TB ?

Li started to dominate the rallies towards the end of that set, but credit to Laura for haning in and matching her even when Li upped her game. She just couldn't win a close tie break

Yes, the best of Li Na looks just a bit too good for Laura, but her best isn't bad at all !

Hard to say as Laura isn't exactly playing her A game.

Sorry  confuse   Yes, she's making some mistakes, maybe going for too much ( and maybe better vs Clijsters )  but she's ruddy competitive against Li Na here.  Overall, this is Laura at a very good level for her !

Tremendous performance to win in 3 sets. So impressive. First set was patchy from both players and in truth Li rather handed it to Robson. Both players were superb in the second set. Then Laura dominant in the third despite some excellent play from Li to save bps early in the set. Laura's level for sets two and three was so high. Laura's return of first serve is so much better now, backhand much more reliable and her defensive play is not that bad.

Laura won 83% of points when she got her first serve in  ( 44 / 53 )  and come the final set she was getting it in 62% of the time.

To my mind ( and I've said so wink ) she's been playing pretty well for some time in other parts of her game, while her serve was dodgy, and the first serve % and DFs were very worrying.

But as I said before, if and when that serve becomes an asset ( as it can become and latterly did today ) rather than a hinderance, with the rest of her game and the power she has, then look out !

Movement has almost inperceptably been getting better and better until you look today and much of the time to my mind she was easily getting to balls that Li Na was pounding away that she would barely have got a racket on a year ago.  I always thought that would be a long term weakness, and we shall ultimately see, but she has managed to make real strides in this department.

Li Na's played a fair bit better ( too often very loose, at other times very good ), Laura rarely after the match got fully engaged, and I am so plesed for her  smile
