Oh and for those asking for live streams, bet365 are streaming US Open at no additional cost than having the normal funded account. Okay the quality not great, but at least it's guaranteed picture.

Funny really- in some ways a breakthrough win, but on some ways not. Kim's WR25 now, and Laura's biggest scalp was Safrona WR22 - I know not in the same league as Kim, but WRs don't lie.

i think safarova retired injured in that match whereas kim had everything to play for. all things considered  i am quite sure this will go down as lauras best win so farbiggrin

In this case they do. Kim is WR25 from only playing 11 tournaments. If she'd played the 20-25 tournaments that is a normal year for a top-ranked player, she would be much higher.

Has anybody worked out what Laura's rank might be after this second round win?

Wow, what an amazing win by Laura. That must be the best I've ever seen her play, to end Clijsters 22 match US Open run, as well as her sigles career.

Everything seemed to be working for Laura today - big forehands, good first serve, not too many doubles and amazing composure under pressure. Also her ability to get balls back on the stretch has come on so much this year. Kim actually played quite well too which contributed to a high quality match.

All in all the best performance by a British woman in a long time. I'm not sure I ever really believed she could win until that shot she hit at 5-5 in the tie-break.

Potential Route to the Title for Laura

L64 : Kim Clijsters
L32 : Li Na
L16 : Sam Stosur
QF   : Victoria Azarenka
SF   : Maria Sharapova
Final : Serena Williams

Just a walk in the park really biggrinbiggrin

Go Laura !!!!!

She just has to beat 6 of the last 7 grand slam winners then. No problem!

One Grand Slam winner down, 5 to go.  As we said - No Problem

GO LAURA !!!

I'm not sure I can claim that my 'No problem' was a serious comment now.

I've also just realised, not only does she have to beat 6 of the last 7 grand slam winners, they are in the order they won those slams!

Hello.
Long time lurker.
Finally motivated to sign up officially to say well done to Miss Robson.
Shame she'll only tread water because of the win, as she had the good US Open last year, qualifying and getting to round two.
Somehow that doesn't quite seem right, the magnitude of her achievement seems deserving of more. But, who's gonna complain today :)
They'll be plenty of time to conquer the world in the coming years.
Big smile tonight. Good luck to her and to all our players, always

PS: The Belgian Tennis association are being rather rude about Laura which seems pretty churlish, and not at all the sort of thing to represent Kim Clijsters magnificent career.
I Love Kim, doesnt everyone? :) So many warm memories of her, kindness and compassion.
WTA loses so much as she retires.
She's a better human being than a tennis player. I think that's the biggest way I can express my affection for her, a compliment that huge.

Tx,
Katie

Bookies had her at 12/1 to win that match, so by far the biggest win of her career based upon her chances of winning a match.
Krajan's magic working already, can't believe how composed she was at the end of the match.
Only upside from here in particular with her fitness and the belief this win will give her. It will be very tough to backup this performance against Li Na, but she just needs to remain uninjured for a long period and top 50 by the end of next year is a real possiblity.
Only 5dfs and a brilliant first serve probably the key to victory, although her ability to retrieve one more ball nearly as important. Also she started the match slowly and just got better and better, reversing her normal trend. Kim was forced into going for too much, just a shame the camera's never got a shot of her camp, would have loved to have seen Judy's reaction at the end.

Brilliant from Laura tonight - ending Kim's 22-match winning streak at the USO and the first player outside the WTA top 9 ever to beat Clijsters here - the Belgian's record at the US Open before this year was 3 titles in her last 3 appearance and losses to those who were ranked 6 (Serena 1999), 2 (Davenport 2000), 4 (Venus 2001), 9 (Mauresmo 2002) & 3 (Henin 2003)

so glad I stayed up to watch this! Had thought of turning in at 3-5 in the first, but just gave it a "couple more games" and then I couldn't leave!
Yes, sad to see Kim lose - she's lovely and has been a great champion - but so thrilled for Laura. Shame she won't improve on last year's points (yet - who knows what might happen!), but what a fantastic win!
