Terrible result for Josh, the draw was as good as he could have hoped for and he didn't just lose he was thrashed. However I can't say I am that surprised. I said about 6 weeks ago that playing home futures events all summer would be poor preparation for the US Open and that he should have been looking to play some challengers instead. Since Wimbledon he has played 21 matches, only 2 have been against players in the top 300 and neither were close to the top 200.
Even though Tursunov is well past his best, it looks like Wardy put up a decent effort, especially given his own recent injury.
I am shocked that Josh lost (at all, let alone so easily) - unless it was just a very off day, it seems pretty clear that kundalini and RJA are right, and if today convinces him that he needs to get used to playing Challengers regularly if he ever wants to make any further progress, then it will have been worthwhile. However, he has given the impression recently that he realises this but has maybe had to do the UK Futures instead for financial reasons - it certainly can't be easy.
Looking back to 2006, Josh managed to qualify for Wimbledon having played mainly Futures until the grass court season started apart from a R1 loss at the Cardiff Challenger. During the grass court season, he got one win in Surbiton Challenger qualifying and another in Nottingham ATP qualifying. In between Wimbledon and when he qualified for the US Open too that year, his schedule went:
- Felixstowe Fut on grass - winner - Manchester Challenger on grass - runner-up (beat Martin Lee & the Gooch, lost to Mankad) - Nottingham Challenger on grass - QF - Ilkley Fut on grass - out in R1 - Bronx Challenger on hard - QF (beat Fognini, lost to Cilic)
... so he certainly wasn't lacking in experience against good players before USO Q started that summer.
