Great resut for Jo, and she gets the good old Q1 win 40 points. Ar least she beat a highly ranked opponent to earn them.
Real pity to see hear that it was a real struggle for Naomi. There do seem to be issues with both Broadys. I know nothing about their current situation, but can't help wondering if it is a real struggle financially ( as has been indicated with Naomi before ) and otherwise. Principles are fine but in no way should careers be martyred over them Because they are then the ones losing out ! Just a thought and it may simply be loss of form on both their parts and I may have the total wrong end of the stick.

- somehow that matchup just felt good to me! Great work from Johanna. Unfortunately I have no feeing in my bones about the next round. Maybe Johanna just needs to see goats in lifts before every match!
Q1: Johanna KONTA (GBR) 205 Vs. (q8) Chang KAI-CHEN (TPE) WR 114 6-3 7-6(5)
Q2: Johanna KONTA (GBR) WR 205 Vs. Kurumi NARA (JPN) WR 159 (CH: 101 - August, 2010)
Nara is 200 in the Race, Johanna 185. So this should be pretty close.
Kurumi had a decent run in her last event, at the end of July, losing to the resurgent Jung-Jan Chan in the Semis of the Beijing 75K.
Before that though her only win since April, in 5 total events, was in qualies at Birmingham against Daneika Borthwick, who was un-ranked at the time.
She did beat a decent player (Kathrin Woerele, GER WR 220) in 3 tight sets in Q1 here though.
A shame Erika Sema lost (She was the other seed in this part of the draw) as JOhanna already beat her twice in the USA this summer!
I think Johanna has a real shot at qualifying though.
Really good from JoKo - must have been the sight of Mirka taking Fed for a walk on a leash that inspired her (or is that not the kind of goat she was talking about ... ) - it will, unless I have completely missed something, easily take her into the WTA top 200 for the first time.
