Week 34 - WTA ($637K) - New Haven, CT, USA Hard

Tweets from a reporter during the match. His last one at the end read '#Bartoli comes by #Robson with two aces 6-3 6-3. Decent challenge from Laura, just couldn't string it together.

Clearly the first serve is the main issue, because she didn't serve too many double's today after serving 2 in her first game.
Bartoli's best shot is her return of serve, and she will stand a couple of yards inside the baseline when returning to pressure you.

I think you can go 2 ways when reviewing this match. Clearly very competitive against an elite player which is very encouraging, but the 1st serve needs to get her 70% of points won in order for her to win these types of matches so 39%( probably an alltime low, and hopefully never repeated) is not going to get it done. Her new coach if you look at the results of his previous charges tends to take time to improve their games, so no need to push the panic button yet.

I simply do not see at all where you get this impression that the rest of Laura's game has "just collapsed".  This simply does not tie in with her general scores over the last few months, often against highly ranked opponenst nor from the little bits that I have seen of her.  In general she has been advancing, and off serve very competitive.

Her serve is becoming very frustrating, clearly mostly for herself, and it just should not be so at this stage of her career.  But actually i would say the rest of her game seems to have held up pretty well, especially considering how much a serve is generally thought to effect the rest of a player's confidence.

But, would still be the youngest in the top 150, and only 9 in the top 200 are younger. The highest rank of those is Annika Beck at 141.

You were really just seeing if we were still awake weren't you.  How about Laura's the youngest player in the top 140 given Annika is younger  wink

So still well clear of anyone younger.

Thanks for the table of stats, interesting stuff.

The match before Laura's is already on court - Stephens v. Paszek, just started

So Laura probably will be on at a decent time for us here. 22:00 at the latest I suppose.

Sloane made double quick work of dispatching Tamira, so Laura's up very soon now.

As a sidebar, I'm more and more impressed with Sloane, almost by the match. Our top ladies might hope to emulate her achievements. After all, she's only 9 months older than Laura. I predict now that Sloane will win the French one day - health permitting.

Laura's serve is a total train wreck at the moment.

Marion has now served more double faults than Laura. Bit of a shambles all round it seems !

Bartoli has 1 set point, and that's all it takes.

An ugly seeming set from both players.

Laura got better through it though, and Marion slightly worse. Hopefully both will continue that in the 2nd.

3-6

I'm sure everyone's sick of my thoughts on this match by now, so I'll merely state the score.

R1: ROBSON, Laura (GBR) WC 88 lost to BARTOLI, Marion (FRA) [5] 11 3-6 3-6

Laura 'created' more break points in the match.

Laura certainly having big poblems on serve at the moment - not only with double faults and low % first serves, but also in her last two matches not winning many points behind the first serve when it does go in.

Hard to tell from the stats how the match panned out beyond the fact that both players were clearly not serving well.

I think there is a good chance Laura's serving problems are affecting the rest of her game, especially as she seemed to do OK in the return games today, when she didn't have to worry about serving. If she gets too focussed on the serve, it would make her less ready for the rest of the point.

We should know more after her US Open 1st round provided that is on TV.

A succession of bad draws means that Laura is regularly playing opponents who are well inside the top 50 when she has only just entered the top 100. Any service that is not first rate will lose the point. She has to continually push herself to and beyond her limit. She may be playing badly or she may be outclassed or she may be trying too hard to raise her level. I just don't know how well or how badly she is playing because I haven't seen many of her matches lately. It is however noticeable that when she is under pressure her service throw-up becomes erratic. That is worrying because the throw should be metronymic by now.
