Would I be correct in thinking that most of the best (male) players the UK has produced recently have been ones who plough their own furrow somewhat? That's not a reference to whether they have LTA support or not; some have, some haven't. But it's my impression that if you look at our top 8, Murray, Baker, Ward (J), Bogdanovic, Bloomfield and Ward (A) appear (over time) to have chosen to train in places or to have run schedules that are quite separate from most of the rest of the Britons. Clearly in Murray's case -- and to some degree in Baker's and James Ward's -- that's a function of ranking. Not sure ... this is just an impression, not a rigorous analysis ....
i am new to following british tennis and am curious to where james ward cames from because he wasn't exactly a top junior and to get into the top 150 in the world for him was quite an achievement i think. however please correct me if i am wrong. mabey he just didnt play junior tournaments?

If I am not mistaken, he spent some of his teenage years over here at the Juan Carlos Ferrero school near Alicante.

The facilities there are pretty good but nothing out of the ordinary - but the weather here is a big bonus (except in August when it is too damn hot!!)
