RE: Week 30 - ITF ($50K) - Lexington, USA Hard

I spoke too soon 4-3*

Now it looks like nail biting time.

Match suspended - heat. Same as round 1, but again, other courts seem to be continuing on?
It's at least 32° out there and 60% humidity, so pretty opressive.

A couple of weeks ago in Palermo they were stopping for heat after 2 sets, so must be a general rule.

Another long match, I wonder if Joko is trying to be less aggressive and more consistent leading to longer rallies. Didn't look good in the third set, but then broke to love to take the match and as David says good proof of fighting spirit which is something Jo has lacked a little bit of during her senior career so very positive.

Johanna's next opponent is: Shelby Rogers (USA) WR: 293 CH: Current

A more or less even chance to make a semi then, which would mean 14 more points on top of her 18 already so far this week.

That should be good incentive!

Johanna played Shelby earlier this year on clay and lost in three.

Rogers beat JoKo 3-6 6-2 6-2 in Dothan in April ... revenge would be sweet!

Good spot.

Shelby is also coming off winning the Yakima ITF $50K (also Hard - Outdoor) a fortnight ago.

En route she beat Pavlovic [1] (WR 147) and Coin [6] (WR 216).

So, she might be a form opponent. unfortunately.

As an aside, I venture to suggest that Mallory Burdette's progress here (she put out the top seed, Rogowska (WR 120), in straight sets in the first round, then her compatriot, Jessica Pegula (WR 216), in the second, also in straight sets) goes some way to explaining her unexpected defeat of Annie K in the first round at Stanford a couple of weeks ago.  She was unranked then, but weighs in at N° 496 now & will clearly be a force to be reckoned with from now on... hmm

Johanna's match is on Stadium 1 at 00:30 tomorrow morning.

There's a small chance it might be streamed in that case, as the first match of the evening session on the main show court.

Bethanie Matthek-Sands (who is now the USA #25!) match was streamed last night in the same slot  - albeit on Stadium 2.

NB: at 00:00 on bith show courts, is scheduled something intriguingly titled "UK Exhibition". No idea what that could be, but it's probably an olympic tie in.

Will be tough for Jo in the next round. I watched the last few games of their previous match on streaming and was very impressed by Rogers game. It was clay though and that seemed to edge it for Rogers.

Revenge time though Jo
