Very nice first round draw for Bally (if there was a gold medal for good 1st round draws in major tournaments she would surely win!)

Yes, that brings her average first-round opponent rank for this year to a staggering 184 for main tour events, although Anne is still edging her out on the big events. From a rankings perspective, the Olympics isn't really a major tournament, comming in about halfway between a Premier 700 and a Premier 5. There are 15 events with more points on offer.

R1: KEOTHAVONG, Anne (GBR) 76 v WOZNIACKI, Caroline (DEN) 8
R1: BALTACHA, Elena (GBR) 102 v SZAVAY, Agnes (HUN) UNR
R1: WATSON, Heather (GBR) 67 v SOLER ESPINOSA, Silvia (ESP) 63

Anne played Caroline in 2009 and lost 1 & 0
Elena played Agnes in 2010 and lost 3 & 5

What odds Szavay pulls out before Martic and Laura gets to play Elena instead of Safarova?

Would they re-jig the draw in that case? You are meant to be in a different quarter of the draw to a player from the same country.

I would say in terms of prestige an Olympic title ranks only behind a Grand Slam though. Obviously with different entry rules to other tournaments such as 4 players per country, it would be unfair to award huge amounts of ranking points.

That's correct per the ITF rules.  So IF anyone else does pull out they'd have to put Laura into the 1st Quarter (Azarenka's) and shuffle others around 'cos Anne is in the 2nd Quarter, Bally in the 3rd and Hev in the 4th.

I doubt that would apply to changes due to withdrawals after the draw has been made.

Gutted for them all to miss the opening ceremony. Whilst I agree it's the right decision given the timings of the ceremony and matches, I think it's really bad overall organisation. So many of the atheletes will never have the opportunity again, and for the Brits, never in their own country.
