ITF have just tweeted that she's in for Bondarenko, so that might mean Laura will be in once the Martic w/d is confirmed.

That would be excellent, I'd really be watching it with some hope then. Just hope Robbo's rested and sorted her serve out!

If the wildcards had gone to Robbo and Watson initially would Anne be in but not Bally?

Great news!

I've been working at Heathrow today so if Laura misses out by one spot I'll take the blame for not 'accidentally' dropping a bag or shoving a trolley right in front of Peer or the German contingent when I had the chance!wink

Decent billing for Amanda Carreras (albeit a rubbish screen cap from me!), who carried the Olympic torch in Ealing today:

Well I wanted to see Heather as a singles competitor so I'm well chuffed. This will be her chance to show how she can do next to Bally & Anne.
Lets face it none of them are going to win, but it will be interesting to see whether experience wins out over youthful exuberance among the Brits.

Great news about Heather, and unofficially Laura.

Am I right that the mixed doubles has no entry list in advance, basically being a draw of 16 pairs based on these players that are on site for singles and doubles, in some way picking the "best" 16 of these pairs who wish to compete ?

The entry is on 31st July, day 4 of the singles/doubles competition. Players can use the lower of their singles/doubles ranking to enter and there are 2 wild cards.

Mixed doubles is to some "hit and giggle" at the best of times, but in this instance and with selection in this way I do think that awarding Olympic medals to such pairs as against all those "real" Olympians that have dedicated thenselves and trained for years for their ultimate Olympic award is a bit of a farce.

I've felt that not all Olympic medals are equal to each other, long before mixed doubles came along. Just look at the number of instances over the years of the same swimer winning lots medals at multiple distances and it becomes obvious that if you have the correct skillset to be the best at one distance, you are probably the best at several of them, so is there really justification for them being different events? Then you have gymnasts who get a medal for each bit of aparatus and one for the overall points total, so you compete once and get two chances to win.

Beeb website has Hev down as an ITF place. Isn't she in on merit?

I think that's because she's in the team on an ITF place in the first place, but she is info the singles on merit from those in the doubles. In other news, it seems we may have been a bit premature assuming Laura is in (Google Transalate):

Petra Martic will still, it seems, according to the latest information go to the Olympic Games in London. Although our best tennis player has a problem with wrist and leg two days ago it seemed that surely will not play in London, after tonight's review appeared in Zagreb is a glimmer of hope.

- It made the checkup and decided to travel to London. When Peter arrives here will have all the necessary care and we'll see whether or not ultimately be able to compete - she is executive director of the Croatian Tennis Association Marina Mihelic.

Szavay has only played only played one tour match since last year's French Open ( on clay in April ) owing to a serious back injury, so there must be some question if not about her fitness, at least her rustiness. Not that Bally has been playing much recently and seems to have her own various niggles.  Before Szavay's injury it would have been nae chance.

Decent round one draw for Heather and err not so decent for Anne.

Very nice first round draw for Bally (if there was a gold medal for good 1st round draws in major tournaments she would surely win!) and good draw for Heather too. Wozniacki not on great form but even so hard to see Anne causing an upset.
