RE: Week 26 - WTA ($11M) - Wimbledon, UK Grass (Main Draw)

Fabulous, fabulous win for Hev!   Benesova looked a distinctly unhappy bunny throughout the match! wink

Great stuff Hev.

I hope Johanna can close it out tomorrow. She was in charge and Christina crumbling at the end of today

A very positive first day.

Heather player excellently and thoroughly dominated the match. Benesova was poor but she would have had to have player a lot better to compete with Heather on today's form.

I wasn't expecting anything from Johanna today so to be 7-7 in the decider overnight is a bonus.

Naomi played well in parts but a couple of dips cost her against a fairly limited opponent. Frustrating, because it's a match she will feel she could have won.

The British girls are spread more evenly across the day tomorrow, with Laura kicking things off at 11:30. If Laura can match Heather's level of performance she will have a decent chance of pulling off a big win.

Great performance from Hev - an expected winner (according to me, the bookies and Guy McCrea on 5 Live Xtra, a 'big surprise' to his co-commentator David Felgate who must follow WTA a little less closely!) but she looked so at home on Centre Court and the win was so convincing.

What with 'Typhoon Tara' and Hurricane Hev allowing her just 3 games each, Benesova must be sick of the UK's 'extreme weather'!

Hev should be back up around her career high (WR 87) with that win and she is 'virtual' GB no. 1 for the night - Anne can of course overtake if she wins tomorrow but Bally and/or Laura would need to reach R3 to stop her ending Wimbledon in the GB top 3, deep runs into the draw from JoKo excepted! She now gets Jamie Hampton, whom she also alllowed just 3 games to in Auckland last year, after the American upset Hantuchova.

Great performances all day from the Brits even in defeat starting with Josh etc., etc.,
Its interesting the way people have reacted to how well JoKo has played, when anybody who follows GB tennis closely know shes a class act and way underranked.
Hev was solid tonight basically playing like she has all summer, and the win was never in doubt.
By the way is this really JoKo ? ;) http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/interactive/galleries/players/wta313907.html?start=0

Brilliant performance by Heather, she was so smart! She didn't need to go for it so much, as Benesova was so erratic. However, she showed some impressive skill. Hampton next, looks winnable. But this years Championships I'm trying to lower my expectations of Brits. :L

Konta has done brilliantly so far! I hope shIe can close it out. It would give her such a boost, after years of waiting to become a British citizen she could be shortly embraced by the British crowd for becoming an elusive 'British winner'. *Fingers crossed*

I didn't see Naomi.... But on grass I would've thought that would be a very winnable match.

LOL - I hear Naomi Konta is down to play mixed doubles with Oliver Goodall winkwink

Btw the WTA stats guy has just reported that Hev is the first British woman to win a match on Centre Court since Jo Durie in 1985!

I don't do stats by court, but I am wondering whether that can really be true!

Brilliant from Hev - really enjoyed watching that match - and a great way to start her centre court career!

Thought JoKo was down and out of that one - but what do I know?! Hope she can come out and finish it tomorrow.

Only saw a few points of Naomi's match, so not sure I can say much about that.

So happy for Heather, especially after the injury last year. After the first 4 games of the match, I pretty much knew Heather had too much all round game on this surface for Benesova.

Would have been nice for Heather to play Hantuchova as I feel she was there for the taking (as Hampton proved) and would likely have been on a bigger court. Nonetheless, cannot complain with drawing Hampton whom Heather has beaten already in the past.

Thrilled Joko is putting in a great show as well. Hope she doesn't come out too nervous when serving tomorrow.

If that is verified, then that truly is an abhorrent statistic. Tragic.

27 years without a British Woman winning on Centre Court is ridiculous, but to be fair almost all matches in that time would have been against top 10 opponents. Late at night matches (i.e. not on the original schedule) are always likely to be the best chance to win on a show court, as with Bally against Bondarenko a few years ago (which must have been court 1)

I like how the matches are nicely spaced out tomorrow--should be a busy day for me. And by busy I mean sitting on the couch.
