Made a bit of a meal of serving it out (broken to love at 5-1 and went down 0-30 at 5-3 but looked to be playing well earlier on from the little I saw of it)
Johanna WR 212 very nearly pulled off the greatest shock of all. Taking Mchale WR 30 to 10-8 in the third was a fantastic effort.
Yeah, and the beeb didn't even put it on freeview. BOO!!!
But it was streamed live on the web site. Agreed, Jo did well to take McHale to the wire, but given that this was her first Wimbledon & the fact that the great British public at large could hardly be expected to recognise the name after her recent switch of allegiance from AUS to GBR, albeit not very sympathetically/accurately documented by Aunty & certain other media, the Beeb would've been hard pushed to justify further sustained terrestrial TV coverage. That said, had she caused an upset by defeating the 28th seed, there's no doubt that they would've been falling over themselves to document the occasion...!
Wohoo. First Brit woman into round 3 for 10 years.
Yes, and the first Brit to get back to back Wimbledon wins against WTA top 100 players since Sam Smith in 1998 (that stat via Ben Rothenburg)
In fact, Heather is only the 4th British woman to reach R3 since 1990 and, unless I've missed one, just the 7th British woman with 2 or more main draw wins at Wimbledon in the last 20 years (i.e. 1993-2012):
7 Baltacha (includes R3 in 2002) 5 Karen Cross (includes R3 in 1997) 4 Anne 3 Smith (includes R4 in 1998) and Latimer 2 O'Donoghue and Watson
Today's win should take her to about WR 80 and she is just 12 points behind Anne, who of course has a 'game in hand'.
