RE: Weeks 26 & 27: Wimbledon (grass) - men's singles

I was impressed. Shot selection not always perfect but I thought he played really well.

Oli is probably going to really disappointed right now but I am sure that in a few days time he will look back very positively on how he played.

First time I've seen Oli paly (or hear as half of it was a 5 live thingy). I must say I'm impressed with his talent, but not so impressed with the way he didn't hold his nerve on big points eg end of TB, and to give the match away. Kinda reminds me of Robbo. Hopefully he'll get a better shrink.

that will come with age and experience though, remember he is still only 18, nothing to worry about. the important thing is he played well!

That is really, really harsh. He held his nerve on lots of big points and the way he picked himself up for the 4th set was very impressive. Yes double faulting on set point was a huge disappointment but pretty much every young player has done that at some point. To suggest that he needs to see a shrink is pretty insulting.

think you might be being a tad harsh here. after the tie break i was fully expecting him to fade away and loose the 4th set comfortably but to his credit he kept going right till the end. though his forehand was really impressive as was the consistancy of his serve which made up for all the double faults, plus he hardly had any break points against him

I agree. Any player can have a disastrous couple of points and Oli seemed to relish playing out there, his serving stats were very good generally, and he certainly didn't collapse after losing the 3rd set. I can't see him being too fazed longer term by what happened, especially after reading his own comments on the subject.

Crazy that he won more games than his opponent despite losing 3 sets to 1!

Every player has an achilles heel, and Oli knows he needs to stay more composed on court, but he's only 18 and that aspect will only get better. #pokerface

Usual rubbishy media reports suggesting it was another typical dreadful GB performance at Wimby, when in actual fact all the players performed above expectations. Never going to change but we can always dream.

I was very impressed by Ollie.

I think this was his first ever '5 set' match and he physically seemed to hold up well. Frustrating he couldn't sneak those TB but it's those points in matches that experience comes into play.

I think it's realistic for Ollie (barring injury) to be aiming for Aus Open qualifying in 2013 by ranking as i'm sure he'll get a US open quallies WC as the current junior champ which will be another great experience for him.

Following the emergence of Laura and Heather the pendulum had swung into the womens game for the future but with Ollie, George, Liam and Kyle (plus a few others) looks like its swinging back towards the guys now

Delighted for Dino ( ) & pleased to be proved wrong, at least in his case! wink

Sadly, I fear he'll progress no further:

R2:  (WC) James Ward WR 173 vs (10) Mardy Fish (USA) WR 12

I agree with others re the ranking effect - 45 points for winning R1 c.f. 100 for the women, and it'll take James up into the 150s.

He is the first British WC to win a men's singles match at Wimbledon for 6 years (Bloomers, Delgado & Lee all did it that year, Eaton was a Q in 2008)

H2H v Fish is 0-1, a 1 & 2 loss in Atlanta in 2010.

Jamie Baker is doing really well at the moment - 5-5* in the 1st against Roddick and he has only lost 8 points on his own serve but taken 17 on the Duck's delivery and been the only one to have bps!

I agree he dealt with being down sets really well.

My observations come from the DF when he was up in the TB, and also the DFs when he was at the end of the match.

Broken to love when serving to stay in the set. Really, really poor game.
