Just before I left Nottingham before heading to Birmingham a few weeks ago I was talking to Jonny's dad whilst watching Jonny and Freddie play in the semis in Nottingham. I was thinking how well they had done to come through the draw in that challenger. Now this, just can't believe it. I don't know Jonny personally but by all accounts he is a top bloke. I have spoken to Freddie a couple of times and remember him asking me a tennis trivia question, which revolved around his Grandad's achievements at Wimby. I had no idea of the answer at the time. So I am chuffed to pieces that these 2 have won, and they deserve all the goodwill that they have received and will receive in the forthcoming years.
So over here in the States I was watching doubles on Saturday afternoon.....my wife said, "They are showing doubles now then?" I replied that it was not only doubles but an Englishman playing....she said really?
What a pleasant surprise and one that I will cherish for a long time. Great match and so happy for Jonny! It is a shame that he won't be playing in the Olympics or could that change?
So 3.8 million people saw Marray and Nielsen play. (It definitely had an impact ... had many conversations yesterday with people who'd never heard of him before this weekend but were singing his praises) But am I correct in picking up from the LTA story and various tweets that he (a) won Wimbledon, (b) went out with his family, (c) got up and had breakfast at the NTC, (d) went down to Clapham Common and hit some tennis balls with kids for an LTA event, explaining along the way that of course he'd pointed out his error at a crucial point in a tiebreaker because anyone would because that's what one does?
What can one say but "thank you"?

It's fantastic to have 8 British men in the top 100 in doubles. We often hear it said that the more players we get at a higher level the more chance of greater success. Now I appreciate that probably nobody anywhere would have picked Jonny and Freddie to win the mens doubles but Colin and Ross won Eastbourne and you do get the feeling that now we have a few more men in the top 100 doubles that success is becoming more. After all look at Ken and Jaime making the final at Eastbourne. Jonny's success will surely make all the guys believe a bit more than you can do it. After all whether by luck or hard work or both in reality Jonny has just proved it.
On local TV tonight where he was back at his local tennis club, with his trophy and plenty of admirers, including lots of youngsters, he said he was having a holiday and then off to the States.

Seems to me as though Jonny Marray is just an all round "top bloke", who just happens to be a Wimbledon Champion as well.
You can tell the lad's not used to the limelight. He still has that very endearing did- that- really -happen-to-me look on his face Glad to hear that he and Freddie are playing in the US Open together.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer, more unassuming guy.
