All that said, I am absolutely delighted that Marray won! So lovely to see someone who works so hard with so little notice do something really spectacular. And presumably this means he can go to Wimbledon via the Last Eight Club for the rest of his life .....

Thanks for the comprehensive explanation, Spectator.  Warms the proverbial ****les. smile  It's also in stark contrast to the attitude of the Williams sisters, who, according to the former head racket-stringer at Wimbledon, Liam Nolan, in  Monday's Times, refused to sign a couple of T-shirts all the other players were signing, presumably to be auctioned later, as part of a campaign to raise money for a children's hospice.  He's quoted as saying that they were the only two who refused "because they said they had not got enough time" & that he disliked working with them because "they are very horrible people"!  I find such an attitude quite extraordinary, given their humble origins.

I decided to quote a couple of snippets from your reply because I was intrigued by your final paragraph.  What on earth is the Last Eight Club?  Actually, I think I can guess how players become members from the name, but I've never heard it mentioned before & wondered what precise purpose it served.

The Bryan's come through in 5 sets.

Still they have not looked convincing so far. So maybe, just maybe

Although in mixed doubles you have to reach the last 4, so it isn't that well named.

Cheers, Steven.

RBBOT:  I beg to differ!  Singles quarter-finals = four matches involving the last eight players standing.  Doubles semi-finals (men's, women's or mixed) = (inevitably) four teams, therefore, likewise, the last EIGHT players standing. wink

I think that there is more about it in this interview with Nielsen http://tv2sport.dk/loechte-lettet-stolt-og-nu-skal-der-chilles ... he mentions it and the interviewer asks him for an explanation.

Regrettably, my spoken Danish is pretty nonexistent ... but if you are OK with Danish, the interview as a whole looks good. Danish TV also did some interviews with Nielsen and Marray jointly, which are in English. Quite an interesting one talks about their strategy for beating Karlovic and Moser. And there are buckets of articles in the Danish press.

I meant the last 4 people, not the last 4 teams. It's singles quarter finalists, doubles semifinalists, but mixed finalists.

Court 3 for the semi final but bizarrely the other men's doubles semi gets court one. Hmmmm

Maybe a favour to them, as they've played on Court 3 in their last match, and the Bryans will have played Court 1 far more often?

I think it's me being more hopeful that the first British men's doibles semi finalist in a very long time would get a more premium court.

To be fair that is 5 vs 10 seeding but meh

ANYWAY GO MARRAY NEILSEN
